Why No One Cares About Low Maintenance House Plants
Low Maintenance House Plants

There are a variety of house plants that are a bit fussy, but others require less care. These low maintenance plants are ideal for lazy gardeners or those who have difficulty keeping their greenery healthy.

All three are very easy to cultivate the holiday cactus and peace lily. You just need to water it frequently and give it the bright indirect light.

Calthea Ornata

Pinstripe Calathea has beautiful subtle foliage that contrasts the brighter leaves on plants like Arrowhead Vine or Chinese Evergreen. It can be used to create indoor gardens for offices. These plants are nontoxic, making them safe for pets and children to be around.

This tropical plant needs moderate amounts of light. It will thrive in the sunlit windowsill, but must be kept out of direct sunlight as it can burn its leaves. If you're worried about the sunlight in your home, you can try placing your calathea near a window with an opaque curtain to block the most intense sun's rays.

This house plant also requires humidity. It can withstand dry air up to a point, but it will not thrive in it. To keep the humidity high, mist your calathea's leaves every week using water at room temperature. You can also try placing your calathea in a space with high humidity levels, such as the bathroom or kitchen.

While calathea orchida isn't the most solitary of houseplants, it does require some attention to ensure that it stays healthy. It is not a heavy feeder, but it is possible to apply liquid fertilizer to your houseplants at least once a month during the growing seasons. It's important to monitor your calathea for issues like browning leaves which can be caused by a range of different causes.

Tillandsia

Tillandsia is an unusual houseplant that can grow without soil. There are more than 540 varieties of pineapple or pineapple rose plants. They thrive in bright and filtered light (not direct sunlight) and should be misted with water approximately every two weeks. If grown outdoors, they can be very hardy, but they do best indoors or in very humid climates like Florida.

Tillandsia are ideal for those who travel and forget to water their plants. They can be used to accent other houseplants or arranged in a decorative way and are great to use in terrariums.

In nature, tillandsia is an epiphyte-they are not parasitic and bind themselves to rocks, trees and other plants to obtain water and nutrients. The process of CAM photosynthesis also allows to exchange gases at night and respire. This is unlike other plants, which breathe through their leaves at night. One of the most interesting looking tillandsia species is Tillandsia xerographica with its serpentine-like leaves that curves in a variety of directions. It is covered with trichomes that give the foliage a soft silver color. The species is native to Guatemala, Mexico El Salvador and Honduras. It is often used in terrariums or affixed to driftwood.

Orchids

Orchids can be intimidating to a first-time grower. But with a little research and attention they can add elegance to any space. Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are the most common and well-suited for our homes that are centrally heated and produce beautiful blooms that last longer than cut flowers.

Orchid flowers come in a variety of shapes sizes, colors and sizes. Their petals are often speckled or patterned, and the stems rise up over clumps of long and arching leaves. You can find them all over the world in forests, mountains and deserts.

Certain orchids thrive in bright light, whereas others prefer dim or medium lighting. Whatever the species, it is crucial that the plant receives enough light to flower. Insufficient light can be the primary reason for orchids not to produce flowers. Bright indirect sunlight is the best for most orchids, but direct sunlight can burn the leaves. To avoid this, place the plant in a shade behind curtains or window blinds that allow some light to be filtered through.

Watering orchids is also very important. In winter, you should water the plants once or twice per week. In warmer seasons it is possible to water them 3-4 times per week. Make sure to water until the water flows out without restriction and flushes out any naturally occurring salts and keeps the roots damp. Fertilize orchids every two weeks during growth and every month during dormancy. Make use of commercial fertilizers for orchids such as 30-10-10, dilute to half strength.

Peace Lily

Peace lilies are a wonderful addition to any home because they cleanse the air. They can suck up harmful gases and VOCs like xylene and benzene. They are easy to grow and require minimal care. They can also be used to decorate rooms because of their beautiful and elegant green leaves.

When growing Peace Lilies indoors, they prefer bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves of Peace Lilies. They can be placed near heat or air conditioning vents, but they should not be positioned directly in front of them since this may cause the leaves to lose their color.

Water Peace Lilies frequently, leaving the soil to dry out for several inches before watering again. The plant will drop slightly if it's thirsty.

Fertilize your houseplants once a month using a balanced liquid fertilizer. Follow the recommended fertilization schedule and dilution schedule. Don't over-fertilize your plant, as this can encourage excessive growth of the foliage at the expense of flowers.

Peace Lilies can also help in reducing mildew on curtains and walls. tall house plants do this by absorbing excessive moisture from the air. This is particularly beneficial in kitchens, bathrooms and washrooms where mildew can cause problems. The plant also assists in reducing the amount alcohol and acetone that are in a room which could be detrimental to the health of anyone who is exposed to them.

Anthurium

This well-known houseplant can bring beauty to any room. Its long, bright flowers are a symbol of love and friendship that endures. NASA has also ranked it as the best air purifying plant. Anthurium is an epiphyte, which grows on trees and other plants. It can also adapt to a potted setting. To take care of it, re-pot it regularly using peat moss or coco coir soil mix and keep it in bright indirect sunlight. Water it when the soil is 50-75 percent dry, and mist it frequently (but be careful not to overwater).

Anthuriums can be propagated via seeds or stem cuttings. Cuttings of stems are recommended since seeds are only viable for a limited time. To accomplish this, cut off a portion of the plant that is at least 1 inch in length and wrap it in sphagnum. Place the plant in a container that is moist and cover it with plastic wrap. This will encourage germination. When the roots are visible remove the sphagnum moss and cut the stem at the node, then place it in an aroid potting mix.

During the growing season fertilize your anthuriums with a liquid plant food that is half strength every other week. Avoid fertilizing anthuriums too often, as they are prone to rot. Be on the lookout for pests that can harm your garden, including spider mites and scale insects.

Spider Plant

Spider plants are a fantastic option for indoor gardens because they thrive in low-light conditions and don't require direct sunlight. They are non-toxic, simple to care for and perfect for homes with pets or children who are young. Spider plants also remove harmful chemicals and toxins out of the air. This makes them a great choice for those with allergies.

Unlike some fussier houseplants spider plants require moderate amounts of watering and fertilization. It is best to place it in indirect, warm sunlight because direct sunlight can burn the leaves. In order to encourage growth, the soil must be well-draining and not allowed to become wet. Fertilize your houseplants regularly with a high-quality potting mix.

When the plant has reached the desired height, it needs to be repositioned. To do this, gently tease the roots and identify areas with a good amount of roots. Place the plant in the pot and fill it up with a potting mix suitable for houseplants that drain well. Water the new container immediately and continue to water the plant regularly until the plant is established.

In winter, indoor plants can become extremely dry and need to be misted to increase the humidity. This can be achieved by placing your plants in a humid place like a kitchen or bathroom, running a humidity machine or grouping the plants together. Brown leaves on your spider plant are a sign that the soil is dry- or underwatering and you should be sure to check the moisture levels regularly.
