How to Choose a Garden Plant
Garden plants add the color, structure and variety to outdoor spaces. Trees, perennials, and shrubs add interest to the garden all year long.
Many popular garden plant s require sun in order to thrive. When deciding on what vegetable gardens to plant, think about the space available as well as the soil type and other aspects of gardening. Also, find out the best ways to begin seeds and then to plant them.
Shrubs
There's a plant for every garden, providing all year-round structure and a wide assortment of colors, leaves and fruits. They can be used as a groundcover or as a backdrop for flowers, or as a hedge. They are also easy to care for and provide a natural environment for wildlife.
They have multiple stems and are perennial woody plants. They do not fall to the ground during winter, as most herbaceous plants will. They can be upright like forsythia, lilacs or forsythia or laid flat on the ground like the evergreen camellia. The height of a shrub is usually less than 13 feet. However there are some experts who limit the height to 10 feet. The ones that are taller are called trees.
In general, shrubs grow slower than trees and are generally more round. They can be shaped with annual pruning or let grow naturally. They are ideal for small-sized gardens that have little space.
Many plants produce stunning flowers, such as camellias that can provide an elegant accent to the winter garden by their beautiful blooms that are a mix of pink, white, or red. Forsythia, azalea and flowering shadbush may add colour to your garden in spring, while the rhododendrons provide a range of colors and scents throughout the summer.
Low-maintenance plants include holly juniper and Japanese boxwood that can be used as a hedge or to add accents to the landscape. Inkberry trees provide stunning deep green foliage. They also are a favorite for bees that pollinate the flowers and produce a sweet form of honey called gallberry honey.
Low-maintenance plants are also cultivated to enhance their scent like lavender and chamomile. This is a very popular herb with the properties of calming and can be used as an herbal remedy to reduce stress and anxiety, reduce headaches and improve digestion. Mint is a low-maintenance herb that is renowned for its medicinal properties and refreshing flavor. Its antiseptic properties, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties can help to treat stomach upset. Its leaves can be brewed into tea to ease indigestion and reduce pain, as well as to ease minor cuts and abrasions.
Trees
Trees have long been revered and have played a vital role in many different cultures. They can last for hundreds of years and have a significant impact on the natural world. They provide shade, shelter and food for wildlife, and also improve the appearance of gardens and homes. When choosing a tree, pick one that is in scale with your house and site. Avoid trees that have messy seed pods or fruit, or that shed twigs often.
As with all plants, trees produce their own food via the process known as photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide from air and water through their leaves, combining the two to form chlorophyll sugars and oxygen. This occurs in special cells known as stomates inside the leaf. The tree then transports these chemical compounds through a network of tubes called xylem or Phloem to the rest of its plant.
The crown is the uppermost part of the plant. It is comprised of leaves and branches, and it protects the roots from sunlight. The crown also gathers energy from the sun (photosynthesis) and removes excess water to keep cool by evaporating it through its leaves (transpiration).
The roots of trees are deep, which helps them stay steady in the wind and snow. They also help to hold soil in place, which helps to prevent erosion. Trees are the underlying structure of our natural ecosystem aiding in regulating climate by absorbing and exchanging carbon dioxide, filtering water and removing the smells. They also absorb pollutants and reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide Ozone, and other harmful gases in the air.
A variety of species of trees have distinct shapes. They can have broad, round crowns that create dense shade or narrow, oval-shaped crowns that are more open and airy. Certain species have a wide, rounded crown, while others have a more egg-shaped shape. gardening vegetable include oaks, horse chestnuts and maples. Some species sport an open-headed, slender look with a canopy that looks like an umbrella, like hackberries, elms, and zelkovas.
The three main classes of trees are gymnosperms, ferns which include conifers, flowering plants and angiosperms. Many of the same characteristics that separate ferns and gymnosperms from other woody species, like their cambium or tuberous root systems, are also found in other categories.
Vines
Vines can transform your garden by bringing a sense of interest to shady areas and concealing unsightly fencing. They soften the appearance of a plain structure or wall and create a a beautiful frame for windows or entrances. They provide colour to the shade and bring a cascade of bloom to the edges of a steep bank or slope. They also camouflage a utility area and block windy breezes from seating areas.
There are over 30 types of vines, however the majority fall into four categories based on the manner in which they grow. Twiners, who use a wrap around some type of support, include clematis, honeysuckle and wisteria. Twiners are divided into two groups namely those that twine clockwise, and those that twine counterclockwise. Tendrils are used by those who use them, which are modified leaves to join structures include creeping fig, Virginia creeper and philodendron.
The same guidelines apply when planting woody ornamentals as well. Consider the location of the plant, including the light exposure and soil conditions prior to selecting a plant. Once established, vines require regular pruning to maintain their appearance.
Pruning should be performed at the same time as you fertilize. This will help you avoid the build-up of nutrient salts and encourage an aggressive growth pattern.
The amount of pruning you need depends on the species, the environment and your level of energy. If you don't want to spend all your weekends looking after your trellises by loppers or herbicide, select a moderately growing vine like Dutchman's pipe or crossvine. Or consider a fast-growing but sturdy vine like American bittersweet, which produces bright red berries that keep their color well into the winter landscape.
Use tie-ups to train perennials such as sweet pea vines and clematis. They will stay in your garden for many years. Rubber ties are a good choice since they won't cut the stems when they expand. Use annual vines such as runner bean, hyacinth beans or morning glory to the structure using string or yarn. You can also use wire or string to secure the vines to a teepee if necessary. Just be cautious not to strain them too much.
Containers
Containers are a great way to add color to your home landscape, without occupying the space of your patio or yard. Containers can be used to cultivate many plants, including vegetables, plants, and flowers. Understanding the needs of plants and the container needed is crucial. Containers can be anything big enough to hold soil, to support the roots of the plant and allow for adequate drainage. This could be terracotta pots, wooden half-barrels, window boxes, baskets and buckets as well as other old kitchen equipment or cooking pots.
Container plants require more frequent irrigation than those planted on the ground. This is due to a smaller root system and the drying effect of direct sunlight in summer afternoons. The containers must have sufficient drainage to avoid standing water, which can lead to disease and rot.
Adding a layer of organic material, like coco coir, peat or compost in the bottom of the container helps retain moisture in the soil. The OM is also an energy source. The plants will flourish if you water the container often to ensure that the soil is moist.
The soil mixture used in the container should be draining, particularly in hot weather. To improve drainage and keep soil texture, it's best to combine organic matter, such as manure that has been rotted, shredded leaves or sand, along with coarse granular materials such as sand.
A trellis is useful to support vines in containers. This will prevent them from becoming over-heavy and falling over. It is important to protect the containers from rain and wind, as they can be easily blown over or rained on and may become muddy quickly.
Since the soil in containers do not contain many nutrients, they should be fertilized regularly. This should be done at the initial soil mixture stage. In this stage, you can add 1 cup of an organic general-purpose fertilizer like 5-3-4 or liquid Emulsion Fish.
