The intricate details of each fabric item helped increase the grandeur of the story unlike other elements. Each choice in the wardrobe was done without a reason as each component told a piece of the story. No matter what the significance of dragon scales, or the manner in which the embroidery depicted that wolves devouring lions the costume department provided the depth of each character's look.


The Game of Thrones exhibition in New York was spectacular. The costumes and props were breathtaking. However, the real attraction lies in the way it's presented. The exhibition is set up as a museum, with each object displayed as if it was a century old.

One of my favorite parts of the exhibit was learning how the clothes of each character reflect their arc. Michele Clapton explains that the colours and materials of each house were carefully selected to reflect their house creeds. She also talks about the way in which the clothes for Sansa and Dany who are two of the characters with the best rounded personalities on the show, morphed over their arcs.


It was fascinating to study the processes involved in creating every costume, particularly when you consider that each outfit could only have 5-10 minutes of screentime in the course of a decade. It's remarkable how much attention to detail goes into the outfits which people rarely think about. This shows just how much the costumers cared for each character.


I was also fascinated by the thinking behind each of the weapons which were developed. Tommy Dunne who was in charge of props on the show explains the way he considered the design of a weapon as part of the character's costume. He would think about the ways in which a weapon can be used and what it could mean for an individual character's journey.


As Halloween gets closer, I can't help but to be inspired by the imaginative and inexpensive DIY Game Of Thrones costumes that are available. No matter if you'd like to costume yourself as the Night King or channel your inner Melisandre there's something suitable for anyone. It's possible to enhance your costumes to the next level by adding some simple accessories, like a red wig and some fake vines to turn yourself into Daenerys or Joffrey.
