Common Houseplants For Warm Climates
Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be cultivated indoors. Indoors, many palms thrive, including the robustly tolerant parlour as well as the beautiful paradise palm.
The pothos that is popular and certain varieties of philodendrons (like the crotons that have variegated) have attractive foliage and are easy to grow. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant moisture, however, allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Aroids
The aroids are a large family that includes a number of the most sought-after plants that we have in our homes today. They are monocotyledonous. Many species are valued for their foliage more than their flowers. They are found in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and growth habits and come in a variety of colors too. These include monstera, philodendrons anthuriums and colocasia.
They thrive in indirect light that is moderate to bright. They can be tolerant of less light conditions, such as a window facing north (just make sure that the sun doesn't directly shine on the leaves).
The majority of these plants thrive best in humid, warm climates. Make sure you use a potting mix that has adequate drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids are susceptible to excessive watering, so make sure you be sure to check the top two inches of soil often. In excess watering, they can lose their shape, wilt or form dark brown, thick, mushy patches.
Bromeliads
Bromeliad plants have a special feature that allows them store water in their leaves or in a cup that is located at the bottom of the plant. They also make use of trichomes to release the water when needed. They are among the most drought tolerant houseplants. However, they do benefit from misting occasionally.
Certain species, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are grown for their colorful foliage, which may include spots, stripes or bands of color. Some species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea produce spikes that are brightly colored flowers.
Some bromeliads are kept throughout the year indoors, while others are moved outside during warmer months (where temperatures remain above freezing). In the Hidden Jungle garden at the Safari Park, we can see bromeliads. The family Guzmania has a wide variety of tropical plants including the pineapple (Ananas comosus), which was introduced to Europe following Columbus' second trip to the New World in 1493.
Cacti
Cacti are a favorite choice for many people to plant in their homes. These unique plants are adapted to the desert environment, and most species have spiney stems. Many produce flowers and fruits. The spines have a purpose to deter herbivores from eating the leaves and fruits.
Like other desert-adapted plants cacti can store water in their roots and stems during periods of drought. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide during the day and release it during photosynthesis, a process that produces food for the plant.
Some cacti, such as the prickly pear (Opuntia) and the cholla are used as living fences in Central and South America. Others, like Lophophora williamsii (cactus peyote) have been used to treat hallucinogenic effects.
Ferns
Ferns are the most common houseplants you'll see despite the fact that they don't have flowers and fruit. Despite this, they're quite easy to cultivate. The key to success lies in the growing medium that resembles the forest floor. It should be rich in organic matter but also include perlite or coarse gravel, for proper drainage.
The needs of a fern will determine how often it is misted. They love the humidity of living spaces and family rooms, however If you notice the fronds becoming brown or dropping leaves, this is a sign of low humidity.
The soil should be evenly moist, but not soggy, to avoid water logging and root rot. Simply insert your finger in the soil to check for moisture. It should feel moist, but not wet. Avoid overwatering, since this can cause a yellowing of the fronds. Keep it away from direct sunlight as these dry the plant too quickly.
Begonias
They can be displayed in a decorative container, in a macrame hanging basket or in the garden, begonias bring vibrant colors to indoor spaces. They thrive when given indirect, bright light, but require plenty of humidity.
Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low maintenance plants that are easy to cultivate. The most popular variety is called 'Dragonwing which has its pink, scarlet and yellow blooms on dark-bronze or a green foliage. Try the 'Baby wings' series for a smaller version. They grow from 12 to 15 inches tall.
Polka dot begonias are typically sold as taller than 4 feet planters for the floor, and they are beautiful with beautiful leaves and Polka-dot patterns on both sides. They require regular watering and a monthly feeding with liquid fertilizer. They are susceptible to wilting when the soil is dry, so be sure to check the moisture level frequently. Begonias aren't too fussy about the type of soil they prefer, but they will appreciate a lightweight, fast-draining mix such as African violet pots or a soil specially designed for houseplants.
Palms
Palms can add a tropical touch to your home. They are commonly used as indoor plants. They are easy to care for and can create an attractive focal point in any room. They are hardy, but they can be damaged by cold temperatures, which is why they should be put in a garage or sheltered in the house in winter.
Palm leaves are also called palmate or pinnate, and are shaped as a V. The leaflets overlap or are joined together across their entire length. They are attached to a costa, which is an extension from the petiole of the leaf blade.
A variety of palm species are harvested for their fruit and timber. They are also planted to provide shade in hot areas and also as indoor plants when a tropical style is desired. For instance the peach palm (Brassica pendula) is grown for its edible fruit and as a plantation crop for coffee, and the tagua or ivory palm (Phytelephas aequatorialis) is used to create vegetable ivory and rattan.
Schefflera
Scheffleras, also known as umbrella plants or octopus, are among the most popular types of houseplants. They are easy to care for and don't require much or any attention.
Scheffleras can survive in medium-light, but thrive best in bright indirect light. Exposure to direct sunlight could burn the leaves, and not enough light can cause the plant to become sluggish and floppy.
Regularly watering is essential, but do not overwater. Overwatering can cause root rot. When repotting, choose a container that's only slightly larger than the original pot; the over-sized pot could result in too much soil that stays damp for too long.
Keep on the lookout for pests such as aphids, scale insects and spider mites. If pests are detected take them off and treat the plants with an insecticide that is natural, such as neem oil. If the leaves start to turn brown, it's due to a lack of moisture or the result of a temperature shock.
Polyscias
Polyscias literally means 'lots of shade' and it fits the plant perfectly it's origins are from subtropical islands in the Pacific. It is a beautiful plant with a twisting stem and gorgeous leaves. It's a wonderful houseplant to create a tranquil atmosphere. The leaves are utilized for their medicinal properties such as diuretic, an antitoxin and to treat colds, flu, fever and coughs. They also contain anti-inflammatory and antifungal effects. Studies have also revealed that they contain eight novel saponins derived from oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).
Place your Polyscias at an area that is sunny but does not expose the leaves to direct sunlight, as they can be burned. Water them when the top few inches of soil dry, but avoid overwatering; this could cause root rot and even leaf fall. Fertilise your houseplant with a labeled feed every four waterings in summer, but cut back to every six weeks in the winter and autumn.
Philodendrons
Philodendrons are one of the easiest houseplant s to grow and are an ideal choice for novice or novice gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron, hederaceum5, is quick-growing and tolerant of different lighting conditions, flourishing as a hanging basket or climbing up a trellis in frost-free areas and happily spreading its heart-shaped leaves over a desk or bedroom window sill inside.
Try the cultivar Congo Rojo, which has leaves that are elliptical with a dark brown-purple shade. Its unique color highlights its sculptural shape and is ideal for modern rooms with sleek furnishings or those decorated in black. Avoid house plants common and place them in a sunny area with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can lead to slowing growth and yellowing of the leaf edges. Use diluted, lukewarm water to add plant food instead of directly putting it into the soil. Watering the soil directly can cause shock to philodendrons and result in their loss of health.
