The tropical foliage of monstera deliciosa also known as hole leaf monstera, provides an exotic look to any room. Another option that is exotic is the bird of paradise with its slender, distinctive blue or orange flowers.

This tropical plant can tolerate cold temperatures, which makes it unique. Most other aroids will quickly become mushy in extremely cold temperatures However, Monsteras can still grow and thrive.

Monstera like all aroids requires a little watering. Only water when the top inch or so of soil is dry. Make sure that any excess water drain out the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot whenever you water. Like all tropical houseplants Monstera also requires a balanced liquid fertilizer. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of a balanced 20-20-20 liquid plant food into a gallon of water and use it to feed your plant every few weeks during the growing season.

Begonia

Begonias provide a splash of color and interest to window boxes, flower pots and garden beds. They are easy to cultivate tropical treasures. If you select single or double-flowered varieties, you'll find a begonia with bright designs and colors that match your style. Contrary to other exotic house plants begonias flower continuously throughout the growing season, and require little or no maintenance beyond twice-a-month watering.

More than 2,000 species of plants belong to the genus Begonia, with the majority having vibrant flowers and leaves. They are mostly native to the tropics but some can be grown in cooler climates.

Tuberous begonias, such as the popular 'Non-Stop' series, are a good choice for shaded spots and containers for the outdoors. These frost-sensitive plants grow from firm, round or oval tubers with either an upright or slender growth habit (for planters and flower boxes) or cascading tendencies (for hanging baskets). To flourish, big house plants need bright light with a little shade. However, they won't flower in very shade or in areas with direct sunlight that is hot and intense. Wax begonias can withstand the heat of full sun, but can quickly burn in hot weather.

Most begonias do not require deadheading, however they could benefit from spring and fall pruning to encourage new growth. They also do best when planted in loose, fertile soil, such as an organic material or a light loamy blend with slow-release fertilizer added.

If you'd like to grow begonias, plant tubers, with the hollow side facing upwards, 6 to 8 inches apart in a shallow tray with moist potting mix. Keep the mix moist but not soggy, and place the tray in a dark area. After about 4 weeks, they will begin to sprout. When they're about 1 inch high, you can move them to a brightly lit space. You should wait until there is no risk of frost before putting them in the ground. Alternatively, you can start begonias from seed or by planting begonia transplants made of wax. They can be bought at greenhouses and garden centers.

Anthurium

Anthuriums, also known as tail flowers and flowers with flamingos provide a tropical feel to brightly lit rooms. It's easy to care for and produces flowers all year round. It was originally an epiphyte plant that grows on the surface of other plants, or in the air, anthuriums are durable and long-lasting house plants.

The anthurium's "flower" is actually a spathe, a protective layer which covers a tiny, real flower inside. The flowers last a few weeks and are available in colors like pink, orange-red or white. The vibrant anthurium flower is popular for hostess gifts and wedding bouquets in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.

Anthurium belongs to the large Genus Araceae that includes more than 1,000 species of flowering plant. Some are well-known, such as the hibiscus, orchid and poinsettia. Others are less well-known such as the arum and tulip trees.

Although it is possible to cultivate anthuriums from seeds it could take up to four years before you can see any flowers. For quicker results it is possible to propagate anthuriums by cutting them from mature plants. Find anthuriums that are established with roots that are compacted and ready to be divided. Make use of a dry, clean knife to cut off a section of the plant, but be careful not to damage the roots.

A freshly cut anthurium can be transferred to a pot that is slightly damp vermiculite. Place the cut in a location that stays around 70F and is exposed to direct, bright light. If necessary mist the soil and the plant often and run a humidity device near it. Apply regular fertilizer to the anthurium but don't apply it too much since it burns the roots.

Repot anthuriums every couple of years or whenever the root ball is too big for the container. Select a pot that is 20% larger than the anthurium's present one to minimize shock.

If your anthurium's leaves lose their shiny luster then spray a bit of diluted natural soap onto the leaves and wipe it with a damp cloth. This allows the plant to breathe and will restore its beautiful sheen. Spider mites can cause anthuriums to suffer but a pesticide is able to help to stop this.

Coconut Palm

Coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera) is found in tropical climates around the world. It is grown to produce edible fruit. It is among the most significant and widely-used agricultural plants in the tropics. It is believed to have originated in Indo-Malaya. The trunk's wood can be used to construct huts and bridges. The fibres that are formed from husks or shells are used to create ropes. The coconut is a drupe and not a real nut.

When the seeds produce an audible sloshing noise when shaken, they are ready to be planted. The seeds are then placed on their sides with the three eyes slightly angled upwards and then dug into the soil to about half the thickness of the shell. Germination takes a while, but can be encouraged by high temperatures and humidity, and after 6 months the shoots and roots are ready for transplantation.

The plant is ideally suited to warm climates. It can tolerate frost but should not exposed to temperatures that are below freezing as it may be damaged. It requires plenty of sunlight and a protected location with sandy soil that drains well. Regular watering is essential, but the soil should not be submerged. Fertilizing with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer essential.

In the spring season, this palm produces sweet-smelling flowers on slightly branched stems which grow male and female coconuts. The flowers are protandrous, and the male flowers open up before the females. The flowers are pollinated by the wind. After about 4-6 years, the tree will begin bearing fruit.

For indoor cultivation, it's ideal to plant this exotic houseplant in a large pot with a well-drained, rich soil. It is a fan of sun however, it will tolerate low light. As it grows, you can repot the plant with a container which is larger than its root ball. Make sure to water it thoroughly and feed the plant on a regular basis with an liquid fertilizer. Coconut palms are generally pest-free. However, they may be affected by a deadly yellowing. This disease is incurable and frequently results in the death of the plant.
