20 Things You Need To Know About Common Houseplants
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warm climates can be raised indoors. A variety of palms, including the robustly tolerant parlour palm and the graceful paradise palm, thrive in indoors.

The popular pothos and some kinds of philodendrons (like the crotons that have variegated) have attractive foliage and are easy to cultivate. Orchids require bright sunlight and constant moisture, but allow the soil to dry slightly between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroids form a large family that includes a lot of the most loved plants that we have in our homes today. They are monocotyledonous. tall houseplants are valued for their foliage more than their flowers. They grow in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and growth patterns and come in a great array of colors too. Monstera, philodendrons and colocasia are among the most well-known of these plants.

These plants are typically exposed to the sun's rays in a diffused manner, which is why they thrive in moderate to bright indirect light in the home. They can be tolerant of less light conditions, for instance windows facing towards the north (just make sure that the sun doesn't directly shine upon the leaves).

The majority of these plants thrive best in humid, warm climates. Place house plants online in a pot with well-draining soil and use a potting mix with adequate aeration. Aroids are susceptible to overwatering. Be sure to check the top two inches frequently. They can droop, wilt or develop dark brown, mushily-colored spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

The plants in the bromeliad family have a unique characteristic that allows them to store water inside their leaves or in cups at the base of the plant. They also release water when required through trichomes. This makes them among the most drought-tolerant houseplants but they can still benefit from being misted occasionally.

Certain varieties, such as the Guzmania or neoregelia are grown primarily for their vibrant leaves, which may include spots, stripes, or bands of color. Others, such as the Tillandsia and Vriesea species produce spikes of brightly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads are kept in the indoors all year long and others are moved outdoors in the warmer months (where temperatures are above freezing). In the Hidden Jungle garden at the Safari Park, we can observe bromeliads. The Genus Guzmania contains many tropical plants including the pineapple (Ananas comosus), which was introduced to Europe after Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a very popular choice for many people to add to their homes. These unique plants are adapted to desert conditions, and the majority of species have spiny stems. They also produce fruit and flowers. The spines are used for a reason -- they can discourage herbivores, which could otherwise eat the leaves and fruits.

As with other desert-adapted species, cacti can store water in their roots and stems for periods of drought. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide in the daytime and release it through photosynthesis, a process that produces food for the plant.

In Central and South America, some cacti such as the cholla, and the prickly-pear (Opuntia) are used to construct living fences. Others, like Lophophora williamsii (cactus peyote) have been used to treat hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most common indoor plants, despite their absence of flowers or fruit. However, they're easy to grow. The key to success lies in an environment that replicates the forest floor. This should be rich in organic matter but also contain perlite or coarse gravel, to ensure proper drainage.

A fern should be misted on a regular basis, depending on its requirements. They love the humidity of living spaces and family spaces, but when you notice the fronds becoming brown or dropping leaves, this could be an indication of low humidity.

The soil must be kept well-moistured but not too soggy to prevent waterlogging and root rot. Simply stick your finger into the soil to check for moisture. It should feel moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering because this could cause a yellowing of the fronds. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight since they dry the plant out too fast.

Begonias

Begonias are an excellent way to add color and a sense of vibrancy to your indoor space, whether you put them in a vase, a macrame basket, or in a garden. They thrive in indirect, bright light and require a lot of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted begonias, which are typically classified as bedding plants, are low-maintenance and easy to cultivate. The most popular series is 'Dragon Wing,' with its scarlet, pink and yellow blooms on dark-bronze or green leaves. If you want a smaller version, consider the 'Baby Wing' series that grows from 12 to 15 inches tall.

Polka dot begonias are typically sold as tall as 4' floor plants, and they are beautiful with beautiful leaves and the polka-dot pattern on both sides. They require regular irrigation and a regular feeding with liquid fertilizer. They're prone to wilting when the soil is too dry, so be sure to check the level of moisture regularly. The begonias do not have a preference for soil, but they can benefit from a quick-draining and light mix such as African Violet potting soil, or one designed specifically for houseplants.

Palms

Palms add a tropical feel to your home, and they are often used in indoor gardens. They require minimal care and can become a statement piece in any room. They are tough, but they can be killed by cold temperatures, which is why they should be put in the garage or protected in the house in winter.

Palm leaves are also known as palmate or pinnate and they are usually cross-sectionally V-shaped. The leaflets are joined or overlapped for part or all of their length. They are attached by a costa that is an extension of the petiole into leaf blade.

Many species of palms are harvested for their fruits and timber. They are also planted to provide shade in hot regions as well as indoor plants when a tropical look is desired. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is grown as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, while the tagua palm, Phytelephas aequatorialis, is utilized to produce vegetable ivory and the rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, also known as umbrella plants or octopus, are one of the most commonly used varieties of houseplants. They are easy to take care of and don't need much or any attention.

Scheffleras can thrive in light-medium conditions but do best in indirect, bright light. Overexposure to direct sun can cause burns to the leaves. Insufficient light can make the plant leggy and floppy.

Regularly watering is essential however, do not overwater. Overwatering can cause root rot. Use a container that is only slightly bigger than the original pot when repotting. A pot that is too big will result with too much soil being left wet for a long time.

Be aware of pests like aphids and spider mites. If pests are detected remove them by pinching them or treat the plants with an insecticide made from natural sources like neem oil. If the leaves start to turn brown, it's due to a lack of moisture or the result of a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias, which is native to the subtropical islands of the Pacific literally means "lots" of shade. This plant fits that description perfectly. It is a stunning plant with a twisted stem and gorgeous leaves. It is a wonderful houseplant to create a tranquil atmosphere. The leaves contain medicinal properties and are used as a tonic, diuretic, antitoxin and to treat coughs, fevers and colds. The plants also have anti-inflammatory and antifungal activities. Studies have also shown that they contain eight new saponins of oleanolic acid (polysciosides) and three well-known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place tall houseplants in an area that is sunny but doesn't expose the foliage to direct sunlight, since this can scorch them. Water the soil when it is dry, but do not overwater. This could lead to root rot and even leaf drop. Fertilise using a houseplant that is labeled feed every four days in summer months, but cut down to every six days in autumn and winter.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are among the most easy houseplants to cultivate and are an ideal choice for novice or beginner gardeners. The classic trailing Philodendron hederaceum5 adjusts to varying light conditions and is able to grow quickly. It can be planted in a hanging pot, or climb up a trellis outside in frost-free areas or spread its heart-shaped foliage over a desk or bedroom window sill inside.

To make a bold statement in your room, look at the cultivar 'Congo Rojo', which has leaves that are elliptical with a dark shade of brown purple. Its unique color highlights its sculptural form and is ideal for modern spaces that have modern furniture or ones decorated in black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons, and place them in a spot with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can result in the edges of the leaves to yellow and cause slowing down growth. Use diluted, lukewarm water to feed the plant instead of directly putting the food into the soil. Directly watering the soil could also shock philodendrons, and cause them to lose health.
