Notes

The sound of her husky laughter filled my ears. She kissed her mother goodbye and danced out the door cheerfully. She would occasionally twirl around in the middle of the street, causing her rucksack to flap around her like a helicopter. I could hear her humming her favourite tune as she skipped across the road.
One of her shoes slipped off her foot as she was passing a nearby house. As she turned to retrieve her shoe, the removal van parked in the driveway started to reverse. I yelled at her to leave the shoe but she didn't seem to hear me. The van was only inches away from her when she realised what was going on.
She leaped out of the way just in time, but in this case, out of the way meant the middle of the road. I thought she was safe. I thought she had time to escape. I watched as the driver tried to bring the car to a halt. I watched as she let out a piercing scream, her last scream.

My eyes flew open in pani. I scrambled around under my covers in search for my glasses, but I fell onto the floor with a loud 'thump!' I groaned in pain as I got up off the floor. I know it was all just a dream but I reach for my phone in the dark.
