Choosing Indoor House Plants
When selecting your house plants, select ones with healthy leaves and roots. Check the leaves for signs of pests and diseases.
Many indoor house plants are easy to care for and can be tolerant of low light conditions. Snake plant (also called Sansevieria or Mother-in-law’s tongue) and yucca elephantipes and coccoloba are a few examples.
Cast Iron Plant
The cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) is a sturdy and durable houseplant with long leaves that are about 2-3 feet tall. It thrives in dim and shaded conditions which makes it a great choice for rooms without natural light. Its dimensions make it a fantastic accent plant. It can make a big statement without taking over a room. This easy-care plant thrives in soil that drains well and in areas that receive only a little direct sunlight. It is tolerant of a broad range of climates, but avoid overwatering as this can cause root rot. If the leaves of your plant made of cast iron begin to yellow, it is a sign that it has been exposed to direct sunlight for a prolonged period of time. Add more filtered lighting or move the plant to a more shaded area.
A variety of cultivars are available that have striking leaf patterns and color combinations. Gold Spike and Goldfeather have yellow stripes that run through their green leaves. Hoshi-zora's cast metal plant leaves are speckled with white and yellow dots, giving the appearance of airbrushed. identifying house plants of cast iron (Aspidistra crussula), with their all-year-round white variety are a great alternative.
Indoor cast iron plants need little maintenance, but you might require trimming the leaves to maintain the shape of the plant, or to remove any dead or dying leaves. You may need to prune the roots if they grow too large for the pot. Fertilize indoor plants once a month using an all-purpose liquid fertilizer in spring and summer months, following the instructions on the product label. Cast iron plants in outdoor areas require less frequent feeding. However you can add general liquid fertilizer to your soil in spring as they begin to grow again.
Snake Plant
Despite their spiky leaves snake plants (Sansevieria) are actually quite gentle and graceful. They are among the most tolerant indoor house plants, withstanding low light levels and occasional droughts. They also help to keep the air in your home clean, absorbing carbon dioxide and harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene.
Whether you choose a'Mother-in-Law's Tongue' that is varie or the tall, green 'Goldband Sansevieria laurentii', these plants look stunning when used as table centerpieces or on a desk. You can also put them around a fireplace or on a window sill, where they will be exposed to sunshine throughout the day.
In addition to freezing temperatures and over-watering snake plants aren't suffering from other problems when kept indoors. They're slow-growing and don't need to be repotted very often, but when they do outgrow their pots, use pots that have an excessive amount of perlite or sand to stop the soil from becoming saturated.
If you decide to repotte your snake plant remove it from its original container using a sharp knife, and then put it back in the same depth that it was originally planted in. Then fill in the rest of the pot with a draining potting mix made specifically for cacti and succulents.
It is best to keep snake plants away from children and pets as the leaves are poisonous if consumed. The saponins are powerful enough to cause nausea and vomiting in both humans and animals. To ensure you are on the safe side, wear gloves when handling the plant. Also, remove any berries from the stems to avoid ingestion of them.
Succulents & Cacti
Succulents and cacti are fascinating plants that add the character of any room. They're adapted to help conserve water in dry (xeric) environments. A lot of them have intriguing or even grotesque shapes along with vibrant flowers. This adaptation allows them to appeal to a large group of plant enthusiasts.
Whether grown outdoors in warm climates, or kept as houseplants succulents, cacti and succulents make excellent companion plants. They are often placed in low bowls to create gardens. They can be planted in windows with sunny light. However, be aware that the majority of these plants thrive with a high exposure to sunlight and at least 6 hours of bright sunlight each day.
The prickly pear cactus is among of the most sought-after cacti available as a houseplant or in landscapes. Other varieties include the agave mammillaria, and Echeveria. These plants multiply by creating clusters around the mother plant, which is a tiny cacti that are baby-sized and gaining them the name "hens & chicks".
Some people use the term "cactus" as an umbrella term for all succulents. However, the word cactus actually refers to a family of plants in the genus Cactaceae. In reality, cacti are only one of the 60 succulent families that are found throughout the world.
They need to be placed in a container that has a drainage hole, just as all succulents and other cacti. They don't like soil that is wet and could turn rotten or grow in a distorted manner in conditions that aren't well-lit. Cacti and succulents require less maintenance than other houseplants. They do well indoors and can be moved outdoors during the summer months however, only in a protected area because of intense sunlight levels that can cause burns to their stems and leaves.
Monstera
Monstera Deliciciosa, also known as Swiss Cheese Plant, is one of the most sought-after house plants today. It is a vining evergreen aroid with wide, fenestrated green leaves with holes and splits that develop on the extending aerial roots. It is a great option for indoors due to its tolerant to bright light and low humidity.
Monstera plants grow well in warm climates. However, they need to be brought inside in the winter months when temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Monsteras aren't suited to regions below this temperature. If you choose to bring yours indoors, make sure to be sure to thoroughly search for pests prior to moving the plants. Examine the soil, and then wipe down leaves and stems. Repot if required.
Indoors, Monstera deliciosa likes bright to medium indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can cause burns to the leaves, thereby affecting the health of the plant. Avoid placing your plant near air conditioning or heating vents because they can cause the leaves to dry out. Keep the soil moist but not soggy by watering it regularly. It is recommended to use bottle or filter water, especially if you have hard water in your home. A humidifier can also improve the humidity levels in your home.
Once the plant is replanted, think about adding an trellis or stake to the pot so your plant can grow once it has established itself. This is a great method to add height to your room and it can also draw positive energy from the ceiling down into the spaces below. In Feng-shui, the Monstera is associated with respecting elderly people and honored individuals. It brings luck, good fortune and prosperity to those who keep it healthy. In Chinese customs, it represents longevity.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
The fiddle leaf is one of the most popular plants on the market. Its distinctive, elongated shape and showstopping leaves make it an eye-catching design for any room in your home. It's important to know that this plant requires more attention and care than other plants. This tropical beauty is a native of the rainforest, which means that it needs bright sun and high humidity to flourish.
It is essential not to overwater your FLF in order to cause root rot. most common house plants at least once a week or every 10 to 14 days. If you do water, make sure to soak the soil until it's drippy and then drain off the excess moisture before putting the fig that you grew with fiddle leaves back into its pot.
The plant is also prone to cold temperatures and can be damaged by drafts. Make sure to keep it out of the way by putting your ficus where it is warm and protected from drafts. Misting your fiddle-leaf fig's leaves using a spray bottle every day will help to maintain the hydration level, and also keep the leaves fresh.
Fiddle leaf figs can generally tell you when they need to drink water. Mast states that the best way to determine if your plant needs water is to poke your finger into soil. If house plants with flowers can feel the moisture halfway up your knuckle, your fig will be fine. If the soil is dry to the point of contact, it's time to soak it in water.
