The Biggest Issue With Easy House Plants And How To Fix It
Easy House Plants

Whether you jumped on the houseplant bandwagon years ago or are looking for a new plant to add color to your apartment, there are plenty of plants that are easy to grow. These simple houseplants don't have to worry about their surroundings or how much water they receive and can recover after a bit of neglect.

The spider plant, for instance thrives in direct sunlight and only needs to be watered when the top couple of inches of soil are dry. The peace lily is another low-key choice with a lovely leaf design.

Ponytail Palm

The ponytail palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata) is a tropical succulent that's easy to care for. It doesn't require a lot of water or care and is therefore a great choice for busy people.

Plant the plant near large windows that are unobstructed or in a location with moderate light. Avoid cold, drafty spaces and hot windows since they can cause drying out of the foliage.

During the growing season it is recommended to water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Avoid watering during winter months, when the ponytail palm enters the dormant phase. Use a moisture meter when watering to ensure that the plant is not overwatered.

Ponytail palms are slow-growing plants which don't require trimming until they get sick. They can withstand brief periods of colder temperatures and drought, but should be moved into a brighter area in winter. Fertilize them a few times a year, during the spring and summer. Follow the directions on the label of a general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.

Schefflera

The Schefflera is a common tropical houseplant. Also called the umbrella plant or philodendron it is easy to take care of and can grow up to 4-6 feet tall indoors in bright indirect light.

The schrefflera can tolerate medium to warm room temperatures however, it doesn't like cold drafts and could protest by dropping leaves. It requires a peat moss-based pot soil and should be fed every month with a water-soluble fertiliser for houseplants.

If plants house is becoming leggy, it may require a new pot. It thrives in a pot that is at least two bigger than its current container. This will encourage growth that is bushy. Pince the growing tips of the plants to encourage the growth of branches.

The schefflera is prone to spider mites. However, spraying the leaves with the oil of neem or insecticidal soap can remove them. It is also susceptible to thrip infestation however, spotting and washing the bugs off the plant using a damp sponge should do the trick.

Chinese Evergreen

The aglaonema or Chinese evergreen is among the easiest house plants to cultivate. It tolerates a wide range of indoor conditions, ranging from low light to bright spots and fluorescent lighting. It is also tolerant of cool temperatures, although it prefers warm temperatures.

Humus-rich potting soil is perfect for these hardy slow-growing plants. Include peat moss to improve drainage and to acidify the soil. In the summer, you should water your aglaonema regularly but allow the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings.

If your aglaonema starts to look leggy or sparse it could be a sign it needs more light, or it may be pot-bound. Repot it into a pot one size larger, loosen the roots that are tangled, and then add fresh potting mix. If your plant is infested insects, spray it with soapy water. There are a myriad of cultivars to choose from, including solid green varieties like Aglaonema 'Frasher' and Aglaonema 'Pseudobracteatum' as well as variegate types such as Aglaonema "Silver Bay and Aglaonema "Stripes".

Calathea

This plant is a simple care houseplant in comparison to its cousins whitestar, calathea ornata, and calathea which can be difficult to care for. Calathea's pin-striped leaves reach over a foot high and look stunning when lit by indirect light.

Calatheas require soil that is slightly moist but not soggy or wet. Poke a finger into the soil and If it feels dry, water your plant thoroughly. A good schedule of watering is every two days, but you should check the soil every day to establish the routine. If the potting mix is not sufficient, substitute it with the mixture of 1 part peat to 1 perlite or Coco coir. Feed calatheas with a diluted fertilizer for your houseplants twice a month in the spring and summer.

The curly or drooping of leaves are indicators of dehydration. They can be fixed by adding water for some days. The leaves' discoloration is most likely caused by pests and can be treated by using insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia is an easy-to-care for plant that can bring an element of color to your home. Its oval, variegated leaves can reach 12 inches in height.

Dieffenbachias, like other plants, may be affected by certain conditions that could affect their appearance and health. Brown leaf tips may indicate low humidity levels, while yellow leaves can be caused by over- or underwatering. Inconsistent watering and hard tap water may also cause issues.

If your Dieffenbachia starts to droop move it to a brighter area. Examine the soil's moisture with your finger from the first knuckle, if you find that the plant is drooping. Make sure to water the soil thoroughly and not just a bit. Make sure to soak the soil in water until excess water drains out of the drainage holes. Plastic nursery planters are the best container for your Dieffenbachia as they allow water to drain more efficiently than porous Terracotta.

Peperomia

Peperomia is a low-maintenance houseplant that can be positioned in any room. The glossy dark green leaves are beautiful and help to purify the atmosphere.

Peperomias are tolerant of moderate temperatures and warm temperatures however they do not like direct sunlight. If the leaves are scorched or discolored, it's an indication that they're exposed to too much sun and should be moved into a more shaded area.

Similar to their wild counterparts Peperomias are epiphytic plants which cling to branches of trees and other tall structures to access brighter, more indirect sunlight. They do best in well-draining soil that is dry between waterings. Repot your peperomia when you notice the roots growing out of the pot. Use a common house plant mix free of peat, and pot up in a container one size bigger than the one currently in use to prevent root rot. Feed your peperomia at least once a month throughout the summer using a general houseplant fertilizer.

Arrowhead Vine

Arrowhead vine (Syngonium podophyllum) is a tropical plant that expands into a sprawling, lush climbing vine and can be used as a simple houseplant. It is a great houseplant for those who are new to gardening, since it is easy to propagate.

To cut a piece of an existing arrowhead, locate a healthy stem and carefully cut it from the bottom of the petiole. This task is best performed with sterile, clean, sharp hand pruning shears.

Make sure to water your arrowhead regularly especially in summer. Allow the soil to dry between waterings because arrowhead plants do not prefer a soil that is constantly damp. They don't require fertilizer in winter, when the plant is dormant and growing slower than other seasons. The plant is a source of calcium oxalate crystals that can cause a burning sensation if consumed, which is why it's crucial to keep it out of the reach of children and pets. The Arrowhead vine, sometimes referred to as nephthytis or goosefoot, is one of the most popular among gardeners at home because of its beautiful foliage and low maintenance.

Snake Plant

Snake plants, also known as Sansevieria, are one of the easiest to cultivate house plants. They are tolerant of low light levels, are drought-tolerant and have few insect problems. This plant is also great for purifying the air inside your home, converting CO2 into oxygen during the day, and getting rid of formaldehyde as well as benzene at night.

Healthy snake plants have firm leaves that are upright and are green with cream, yellow or white edges. Leaves that drop or roll over suggest excessive watering, lack of light, thrips (small insects) or root rot.

Repot your snake plant into an area that is two inches larger when the roots are too crowded or if it has outgrown its current pot. Choose a soil that drains quickly, and preferably with one third sand or perlite and one third peat. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with liquid fertilizer at half strength.

Money Plant

Money plants are easy to cultivate and are considered lucky plants that bring prosperity to homeowners who take care of them. They also aid in channeling positive energy. You can give them to your loved ones and they are ideal for sending wishes to them luck and prosperity. They are said to thrive in the southeast direction of your home, according to Vastu and Feng Shui.

Money Plants aren't just an excellent air purifier but they also tolerate less than ideal indoor conditions. However, it's an excellent idea to check the plant's watering and fertilization needs regularly. If the leaves are turning yellow, this could indicate that the soil is not draining properly or that the plant is being overwatered.

The most obvious indicators of a healthy Money Plant are green leaves and long stems with light brown tips. It is a low-maintenance houseplant that doesn't require a lot of sunlight or fertilizer.
