Aroids

Araceae is the family of many common house plants, such as monsteras, pothos and ZZ plants. This group of plants, which were originally swamp-dwellers thrives indoors because they are easy to care for.

They require a moderate amount of light and warm temperatures as well as high humidity. During the time of growth they will also require fertilizer. Aroids are appreciated for their varied foliage and ability to tolerate bright and dim light. Schiavone states that they bloom less often than other houseplants but when they do, they're usually spectacular. Aroid flowers are typically identified by a spathe (a petal-like structure) that attracts pollinators, and spadix (which includes the actual flowers, or inflorescence). The flowers are typically associated with sweet smells and may be heat-activated, which can increase the release of chemicals that attract insects for pollination.

You may have seen aroids in insta posts or movie backgrounds, as well as curtain patterns. These plants are simple to grow and stylish and this is the reason why so many people have them in their homes collection of plants. They come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and dimensions, but the most striking are tropical aroids such as the Monstera deliciosa, sometimes called the Swiss cheese plant due to its distinctive holes and slits on leaves. This aroid has a strong feng-shui reputation because it repels negative energies. It is easy to grow and perfect for those who are just beginning or want to add drama to their interior decor.

Bromeliads

The bromeliad plant with its tropical appearance may look difficult to grow however, it's actually one of the easiest plants to care for. This epiphyte or air plant does not require soil. It can be attached to trees, glued to objects or planted in shallow soil. Its vibrant colors and interesting textures make this a popular ornamental plant. It is also a low-maintenance plant which is resistant to severe pests.

The bromeliad genus offers a wide range of species and cultivars suitable as house plants, ranging from sword-shaped, spiky leaves of Aechmea to the brightly colored bracts and flowers of Billbergia and Neoregelia. The most commonly used cultivars are the speckled pink-centered, 'Morado, and the wide-leaved red-centered 'Guinea.' The plants usually bloom in the late summer or fall and their stunning bracts may last for several months.

As house plants, they are typically grown in a potting mix. However some of the more tropical species such as Tillandsia or Guzmani can be attached to moss and logs or nestled in coconut shells and do not require any soil at all. They are typically planted in a potting mix, however some of the more tropical species like Tillandsia or Guzmani can be tied to moss and logs, or buried in coconut shells and don't need any soil in any way.

Bromeliads are one of the most drought-tolerant of all indoor plants however they require regular watering. Water them regularly during warmer weather, and twice every month when temperatures are cooler. You can fertilize them on occasion with a well draining potting mix such as the Palm or orchid potting soil.

Cacti

Cacti are among the most durable and rugged of all house plants. They can be squat and spiny or tall and lanky columns or even thorny ornamental balls. Many cacti thrive in containers, even though they are native to desert habitats. Certain cacti flower only occasionally and require special care.

Many cacti have spines that deter predators or to assist in storing water Their rounded shapes allow them to trap and reflect light. They may also have scales. Dinosaur Back Plant thorns (Mammillaria Hahniana) can grow up to 36 inches high.

The Candelabra Cactus's fingers-like pads are covered with spines in regular intervals, creating a distinct shape. This plant is suitable for indoor cultivation and produces white flowers in spring and summer.

The Fairy Castle Cactus, Morenoa Cristata, has multiple stems which resemble the castle spires, or turrets. In the wild, this cactus may grow to be up to 2 meters (6 feet) tall and blooms during evenings. This cactus must be repotted every year or more frequently in the event that the container becomes small. This is an excellent plant for those who are new to gardening, because it doesn't require much water or fertilizer. The spines also deter pets and children from eating it.

Ferns

Ferns are easy to cultivate as house plants, and they provide a tropical look. In house plants online , ferns thrive in shade under the canopy of trees. But, they require some light in order to thrive indoors. Place ferns in medium or indirect sunlight, and avoid windows that face the west or south, as this can cause them to scorch.

Many ferns display leaflets, or pinnae in various sizes and combinations, which can be used to differentiate between different species. They also have a unique vascular structure in which the protoxylem, which is similar to the cells that conduct water in other plants, is confined to lobes of the xylem. This allows ferns to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air, which is essential for growth.

The fronds on a lot of ferns are covered with tiny hairs, referred to as trichomes, which provide protection from many predators. They are unicellular, multicellular or glandular and may release toxic fluids, or emit fragrant aromas, or produce waxy substances that give the fronds a shiny and vibrant color.

Ferns don't require a lot of water and may benefit from drying between waterings. Overwatering may cause the fronds change color, turning yellow or brown and can lead to root rot. If tall houseplants are drying out too quickly you can mist them more often or place them on a tray with water. If your home is dry, a humidifier might aid.

Succulents

Succulents are among the most popular house plants because they thrive in a range of conditions. They thrive in deserts, on cliffs by the sea, and in humid jungles in nature.

There are many different species of succulents and each is distinct in appearance and care needs. They have a number of common characteristics like fleshy leaves or stems that hold water, smaller root systems than other species and the rosette arrangement of leaves. They are also more drought-resistant than other plants. However, they may not be able to tolerate direct sunlight.

Aloe vera, a common succulent is well-known. This common household plant is capable of growing quite large and producing bell-shaped blooms on occasion. The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is another succulent that is commonly used, can add the height and architectural interest of the interior of a room. Both can be grown from leaves or stems that have been re-used.

The blue glow of agave is another succulent that can look attractive in hanging baskets or in a wall planter. The brightly colored foliage makes a lovely accent in any home and is easy to maintain. It requires sunlight that is filtered and slightly moist soil, just like other succulents. It is recommended to not overwater during winter, since this could cause the plant to rot.

Woody Evergreens

The majority of woody plants that have leaves that are evergreen are either conifers, such as pines and spruces, or deciduous trees or shrubs, like junipers (Juniperus) and arborvitaes (Arborvitae). Both species have needle-shaped leaves. Evergreens with woody foliage are covered in a toughened, swollen tissue called bark. This is made of a substance known as the xylem, and it transports water and nutrients through the plant.

Some woody evergreens make great houseplants, as they require minimal maintenance. Pachira aquatica is a great example. The stems that are braided are topped with the rosette of green leather and white-striped leaves. The plant grows rapidly and can grow to eight feet tall within 10 years.

A dracaena or dragon trees is another low-maintenance choice. Some of the best include Dracaena marginata, which is from Madagascar, with its twisted stems and rosettes of narrow leaves; Dracaena sanderiana, the ribbon plant with slender, sword-shaped leaves that are shiny green with white stripes; or D. wilsoniana, the weeping Serbian spruce that has an elongated habit and silvery blue needles.

Many other evergreens that are woody are excellent houseplants. They include schefflera, with typical broad-leafed foliage, the ficus, also known as banyan tree, whose fronds can grow to several feet high; and the false castor plant, also known as Philodendron deliciosum with its beautiful heart-shaped leaves that are slashed into lobes. All require a large pot and bright indirect sun. In general evergreens are stronger than deciduous plants, but they are susceptible to damage by freezing temperatures.
