Are You Getting The Most Value Of Your Common Houseplants?
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive outdoors can be grown indoors. Many palms, like the robustly tolerant parlour palm and the elegant paradise palm, thrive indoors.

The pothos that is popular and certain types of philodendrons (like the crotons with variegated colors) have attractive foliage and are relatively easy to cultivate. Orchids require bright light and constant watering. However, allow the soil to dry a bit between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroids are a large family that includes a lot of the most loved flowers that we see in our homes. Monocotyledonous plants are valued more for their leaves than for their flowers. They are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and growth habits. They also come in a variety of colors. They include monstera, philodendrons and anthuriums, and colocasia.

They thrive in indirect light that is moderate to bright. They can also tolerate lower light conditions such as an east-facing window (just ensure that the sun isn't directly shining upon the leaves).

Most of these plants do best in warm, moist climates. Make sure to use a potting mix that has good drainage and aeration in the container. Aroids are susceptible to overwatering. Be sure to check the top two inches regularly. They can droop, wilt or develop dark brown mushily-colored spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

Bromeliad plants possess a unique feature that lets them to store water within their leaves or in a cup at the base of the plant. They also release water when they need it by using trichomes. They are one of the plants that are most drought-tolerant. However, they still benefit from misting on occasion.

Certain varieties, like the Guzmania or neoregelia are grown primarily for their colorful leaves, which could include spots, stripes or bands of color. Some species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea produce spikes of brightly colored flowers.

house plants online can be grown in the indoors all year long, whereas others need to be moved outdoors during the warmer months when temperatures are above freezing. In the Hidden Jungle garden at the Safari Park we can see bromeliads. The family Guzmania contains a variety of tropical plants, including the pineapple (Ananas Comosus) which was introduced to Europe in 1493 after Columbus' second trip to the New World.

Cacti

Many people love to bring the beauty of cacti to their homes. These special plants are adapted for desert conditions and most species have spiny stems. Many produce flowers and fruits. The spines serve a purpose to deter herbivores that could otherwise eat the leaves and fruits.

Cacti, like other desert-adapted plants can store water in the stems and the roots of their plants for periods of drought. They also make use of their stomata to store carbon dioxide in the daytime and release it through photosynthesis, a process that produces food for the plant.

In Central and South America, some cacti like the cholla and the prickly-pear (Opuntia) are used to create living fences. Certain cacti, including Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote) are utilized to induce hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most common indoor plants, despite the absence of flowers or fruit. However, they're easy to grow. The most important factor to success is a properly-drained growing medium that mimics the forest floor (rich in organic matter but with perlite or coarse gravel for proper drainage).

The needs of a fern should determine how often it is misted. They prefer the humidity in living rooms and family spaces, however if the fronds are turning brown or have their leaves falling off this is an indication that the humidity is not enough.

To prevent water logging or root rot, the soil needs to be evenly moist but not overly soggy. To determine the moisture of a fern just stick your finger in the soil. It should feel moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering as it could cause yellowing of the fronds. Keep it away form sunlight and radiators as they will dry out the plant too quickly.

Begonias

Whether you're displaying them in a decorative pot, in a macrame hanging basket or in a garden, begonias provide bright colors to indoor spaces. They thrive in bright, indirect light and require lots of humidity.

house plants online -rooted Begonias are low maintenance plants that are easy to grow. The most well-known series is 'Dragon Wing with its pink, scarlet and yellow flowers on dark-bronze or green foliage. Try the 'Baby Wings' collection for a compact version. They grow to 12 to 15 inch tall.

Polka dot begonias are usually sold as taller than 4 feet planters for the floor, and they feature beautiful leaves with Polka-dot patterns on both sides. They require regular watering and a monthly feeding with an organic fertilizer. Be sure to check the moisture levels of the soil on a regular basis as they are prone to wilting when the soil is drying out. Begonias aren't too fussy about the type of soil they prefer, but they will benefit from a light, fast-draining mix like African violet pots or a soil specifically made for houseplants.

Palms

Palms can add an exotic touch to your home. They are frequently used as indoor plants. They require moderate maintenance and can be an eye-catching feature in any room. They are hardy however they could be damaged by cold temperatures, which is why they should be placed in a garage or sheltered in the house in winter.

Palm leaves are also known as palmate or pinnate and are V-shaped. big house plants are joined together or overlapped for a portion or all of their length. They are joined by a costa which is an extension of the petiole into the leaf blade.

Several species of palms are harvested for their fruits and timber. They are also planted for shade in warm regions as well as indoor plants when a tropical look is desired. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is used as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, and the tagua palm Phytelephas aequatorialis, is used to produce vegetable ivory and the rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras are also known as umbrella plants or octopus plant. They are among the most sought-after types of houseplants. They are simple to grow and don't require much - or any - coddling.

Scheffleras can survive in medium-light, but thrive best in bright indirect light. Excessive exposure to direct sunlight can damage the leaves, while inadequate light can cause the plant to become leggy and floppy.

Make sure you water your plants often, but be cautious not to overwater. Overwatering may cause root rot. Use a container only slightly larger than the original container when repotting. A larger pot could result in too much soil staying moist for too long.

Watch out for insects like aphids or spider mites. If you spot pests you can nip them off the plant or apply a natural insecticide like neem. If the leaves begin to turn brown, it's due to the lack of moisture or a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias which is native to the subtropical islands of the Pacific, literally means "lots" of shade. This plant fits that description perfectly. It is a stunning plant with a twisting stem and gorgeous leaves. It's a wonderful plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves are utilized to treat ailments, including as a diuretic, antitoxin and to treat fever, colds, and coughs. The plants also possess anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. The plants also contain eight new polysciosides (oleanolic acids saponins) and three known polyacetylenes.

Place your Polyscias at a spot that is sunny and doesn't expose the leaves to direct sunlight, as they can be burned. Water when the top few inches of soil dries, but avoid overwatering; this can lead to root rot or even leaf fall. Fertilise your houseplants with a product labelled "feed" every four waterings during the summer. Reduce the frequency of feeding to six waters in the winter and autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons can be easily grown and they are a great option for new and novice gardeners. The classic trailing philodendron hederaceum5 is fast-growing and adaptable to different lighting conditions, and thrives in hanging baskets or climbing up a trellis in frost-free zones and happily spreading its heart-shaped leaves across a desk or bedroom window sill indoors.

For a striking room statement Try the cultivar 'Congo Roca that has an elliptical leaf with a dark shade of brown purple. Its unique color emphasizes its sculptural appearance and is a great choice for modern spaces with modern furniture or ones decorated with black. Avoid overwatering philodendrons and place them in a bright area with indirect sunlight. Overwatering can cause slowed growth and yellowing of leaf edges. Use diluted, lukewarm water to add plant food instead of directly into the soil. Directly watering into the soil can also cause shock to the philodendron and lead to a decline in health.
