This Is The Ultimate Guide To Common Houseplants
Common Houseplants For Warm Climates

Many plants that thrive in warmer climates can be grown indoors. A variety of palms, including the sturdy and tolerant parlour plant and the graceful paradise palm, do well in indoors.

The pothos that is popular and certain types of philodendrons (like the crotons that have variegated) have attractive foliage and are relatively easy to grow. Orchids require bright lighting and constant moisture, however, let the soil dry out slightly between irrigations.

Aroids

The aroid family is massive and includes some of the most popular houseplants today. Monocotyledonous, many species are prized more for their leaves than for their flowers. They come in many shapes sizes, shapes, and habits. They also come in various colors. Monstera, philodendrons and colocasia are among the most well-known of these plants.

These plants are typically exposed to shaded sunlight, and thrive in moderate to bright indirect light in the home. They can even tolerate some less-light conditions, such as windows facing north (just make sure the sun isn't directly shining on the leaves).

Most of these plants thrive in warm, humid climates. Keep them in a container that is well-drained and use a potting mix that offers adequate aeration. house plants names are prone to excessive watering. Be sure to check the top two inches frequently. They can lose their shape, wilt or develop dark brown, mushily-colored spots if overwatered.

Bromeliads

Bromeliad plants have a distinct feature that lets them store water in their leaves or in a cup that is located at the bottom of the plant. They also release water when they need it through trichomes. This makes them one of the most drought-tolerant houseplants but they could still benefit from misting occasionally.

Some, such as the Guzmania and neoregelia varieties, are grown for their vibrant foliage which could include spots, stripes or bands of color. Certain species, like Tillandsia or Vriesea, produce spikes with brightly colored flowers.

Some bromeliads are used in the indoors all year long While others are moved outside during the warmer months (where temperatures are above freezing). At the Safari Park, we can see bromeliads growing in our Hidden Jungle garden. The family Guzmania contains many tropical plants including the pineapple (Ananas comosus), which was introduced to Europe after Columbus' second journey to the New World in 1493.

Cacti

Cacti are a favorite choice for many people to add to their homes. These unique plants are specially adapted for desert conditions and most species have spiney stems. Many of them produce flowers and fruit. The spines serve a function they are able to stop herbivores from eating the leaves and fruits.

As with other desert-adapted species, Cacti can store water in their roots and stems during periods of drought. They can also store carbon dioxide in their stomata during the day and release it when photosynthesis occurs.

In Central and South America, some cacti such as the cholla and the prickly-pear (Opuntia) are used to create living fences. Certain cacti, including Lophophora Williamsii (cactus Peyote) are used for their hallucinogenic effects.

Ferns

Ferns are among the most popular indoor plants, despite their lack of flowers or fruit. Despite the absence of fruits and flowers they are very easy to cultivate. The key to success is a well-draining growing medium that resembles the forest floor (rich in organic matter, but with perlite or coarse gravel to ensure proper drainage).

The needs of a fern should determine the frequency at which it is misted. They like the humidity of living rooms and family rooms, however If you notice the fronds becoming brown or dropping leaves, this could be an indication of low humidity.

To avoid water logging or root rot, the soil must be evenly moist but not soaking wet. To check a fern's moisture, simply stick your finger into the soil. It should feel moist, but not wet. Avoid overwatering, because this could cause a yellowing effect on the fronds. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight as these dry the plant too quickly.

Begonias

They can be displayed in a decorative container, in a macrame hanging basket or in a garden, begonias add bright color to indoor spaces. They thrive in bright, indirect light and require lots of humidity.

Fibrous-rooted Begonias are low-maintenance plants which are easy to care for. The most well-known series is 'Dragon Wing, with its pink, scarlet and yellow flowers on dark-bronze or a green foliage. For a smaller version, consider the 'Baby Wing' series, which grows to 12 to 15 inches tall.

Polka dot begonias are typically sold as taller than 4 feet planters for the floor, and they are beautiful with beautiful leaves and Polka-dot patterns on both sides. They require regular watering and a monthly liquid fertilizer. They're prone to wilting if the soil is too dry, so make sure you check the moisture level regularly. The begonias aren't fussy about the type of soil they prefer, however they do benefit from a light, fast-draining mixture like African violet pots or a soil specially designed for house plants.

Palms

Palms can add a tropical ambiance to the home, and are frequently utilized in indoor gardens. They require moderate maintenance and can become a statement piece in any room. tall houseplants are hardy but can be killed by low temperatures. They should be kept in a garage during winter or in a protected area inside the home.

Palm leaves are also known as pinnate or palmate, and they are usually with a V-shaped cross section. The leaflets are joined together or overlapping for some or all of their length and are attached along a costa that is an extension of the petiole to the leaf blade.

Many species of palms are harvested for the fruit and wood. Palms are planted as shade trees in warmer climates and indoor plants for a tropical feel. The peach palm, Brassica pendula, is grown as a plantation for coffee as well as for its edible fruit, while the tagua palm Phytelephas aequatorialis, is used to make vegetable ivory and the rattan.

Schefflera

Scheffleras, often referred to as umbrella plants or octopus plants are one of the most commonly used varieties of houseplants. They are easy to cultivate and don't need much - or any - coddling.

Scheffleras can survive in medium-light however they thrive in indirect light that is bright. Exposure to direct sunlight could burn the leaves, and insufficient light can cause the plant to become sluggish and floppy.

Regularly watering is essential however, do not overwater. Overwatering could cause root rot. Use a container that is just a little bigger than the original pot when refilling. A pot that is too big will result in too much soil remaining moist for a long time.

Keep an eye on pests such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. If you find any pests take them off and treat the plants with an insecticide that is natural, such as Neem oil. If you notice that the leaves are turning brown it could be due to the absence of moisture or a temperature shock.

Polyscias

Polyscias literally means 'lots of shade' which fits the plant perfectly it's origins are from subtropical islands in the Pacific. It is a beautiful plant with a twisting stem and gorgeous leaves. It's a wonderful plant for a home that can create a peaceful atmosphere. The leaves are a source of medicinal benefits and are utilized as a tonic, diuretic, antitoxin, and to treat fever, coughs and colds. The leaves have anti-inflammatory properties, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Studies have also found that they have eight new oleanolic acid saponins (polysciosides) and three known ones (polyacetylenes).

Place your Polyscias at a sunny location that doesn't expose the foliage to direct sunlight, since this can scorch them. Water once the top couple of inches of soil dry and avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and even leaf fall. Fertilize your houseplants using a product labelled "feed" every four waterings during the summer. Reduce feeding to six waters in winter and in the autumn.

Philodendrons

Philodendrons are easy to grow and are a great choice for beginners and new gardeners. The classic trailing Philodendron Hederaceum5 is able to adapt to various lighting conditions and can grow rapidly. It can be planted in hanging pots or Trellis outside in areas that are not frosty or spread its heart-shaped foliage on a desk or window sill inside.

For a striking statement for your living space, try the cultivar 'Congo Rojo that has an elliptical leaf in a dark shade of brown purple. Its distinctive color emphasizes its sculptural appearance and is a great choice for modern spaces that have modern furniture or ones decorated with black. Make sure that the philodendrons are located in a sunny spot with indirect sunlight. Also, avoid giving them excessive water. Overwatering can result in the leaf edges to yellow and cause slowing growth. Always use lukewarm water, and then add plant food using a water-diluted solution instead of directly into the soil. Watering the soil directly could also shock philodendrons, and cause them to lose their health.
