Easy House Plants
There are a variety of easy-to-grow plants, whether you've been growing houseplant s for years or you're looking to add some greenery to your living space. These easy houseplants aren't picky about their surroundings or watering, and are resilient to neglect.
Spider plants, for instance, do best in bright indirect sunlight and only require watering when the top a few inches are dry. Peace lilies are another alternative that is low-key and have a pretty pattern on their leaves.
Ponytail Palm
The tropical succulent called the ponytail palm (Beaucarnea Recurvata), is easy to maintain. It does not require much water or attention and is a great choice for busy people.
Plant the plant near large, unobstructed, windows or in a location with moderate light. Avoid drafty, cold spaces and hot windows as they can dry out the foliage.
During the growing season, water the plant only when the soil is dry to the surface. It is recommended to water the ponytail palm in winter is not recommended. The plant will be in a dormant state. Use a moisture meter when watering to ensure that the plant is not overwatered.
Ponytail palms grow slowly and don't need to be pruned unless they are sick. They are tolerant of drought and can withstand short periods of cooler temperatures however, they must be moved to a brighter room in the winter. Fertilize your plants several times throughout the year, during the spring and in the summer. Follow the directions on the label of the general-purpose houseplant fertilizer.
Schefflera
The Schefflera is a common tropical houseplant. It is also known as an umbrella plant or the philodendron. It grows up to 4-6 feet high indoors with bright indirect light.
The schrefflera can tolerate moderate to warm room temperatures, but it does not like cold breezes and can protest by dropping leaves. It requires a peat-moss based pot soil and is best fed every month with a water-soluble plant fertilizer.
If your schefflera is growing leggy, it may be in need of a new pot. It will do well when placed in a pot that is that is a size or two bigger than the container it is currently in. This will promote the growth of the plant to be bushy. Press the growth tips with your fingers to encourage branching.
The schefflera can be affected by spider mites. Spraying the leaves with the oil of neem or insecticidal soap can remove them. It is also susceptible to thrips, but spotting and washing the insects off the plant with a damp cloth should do the trick.
Chinese Evergreen
The aglaonema or Chinese evergreen is among the most simple house plants to cultivate. It is tolerant of a variety of indoor conditions, ranging from low light to bright spots and fluorescent lighting. It is also intolerant of cold temperatures, although it prefers warm ones.
These hardy slow-growing plants thrive in potting soil that is well-drained that is rich in humus. Include peat moss for better drainage and aid in acidifying the soil. During the summer, keep your aglaonema hydrated but allow the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings.
If your aglaonema begins to look swollen or sparse it's a sign it requires more light or that it is pot-bound. Repot it into a pot that is one size bigger, and loosen roots that are tangled and add fresh potting mix. If your plant is infested insects spray it with soapy water. There are small house plants of cultivars you can choose from, including solid green varieties like Aglaonema 'Frasher' and Aglaonema 'Pseudobracteatum' and variegated varieties such as Aglaonema 'Silver Bay and Aglaonema "Stripes".
Calathea
This plant is a simple houseplant to maintain in comparison to its cousins, calathea ornata and whitestar, which can be fussy. The gorgeous pin-striped leaves calathea can grow to over an inch tall and look stunning in bright indirect light.
Calatheas require slightly moist but not wet or soggy soil. If the soil feels dry to your fingers then give the plant a thorough watering. The watering should be performed every two days, however you should test the soil daily to establish an established routine. If the potting mix isn't up to scratch replace it with a well-draining mix consisting of one part peat and one perlite or coco coir. Feed calatheas two times a month during Spring and Summer with a fertilizer for houseplants that is diluted to half strength.
The curly or drooping of leaves are signs of dehydration. They can be fixed by adding water for some days. Pests are most likely to be responsible for discoloration of the leaves. You can treat it with insecticidal oil or soap.
Dieffenbachia
Dieffenbachia is an easy-to-care for plant that can bring a pop of color to your home. Its oblong, variegated leaves can grow up to 12 inches.
Like most plants, Dieffenbachias can be susceptible to certain conditions that can affect their health and appearance. The tips of brown leaves may indicate low levels of humidity, while yellow leaves could be the result of over- or underwatering. Inconsistently watering or the use of hard tap water can cause issues.
If your Dieffenbachia starts to look droopy, try moving it to an area that is brighter. Check the soil's moisture using your finger until the first knuckle when you find that the plant is drooping. The soil should be watered until the excess water runs out of the drainage holes, and do it by soaking it in a long way instead of a light sprinkle. The best container for your Dieffenbachia is a plastic garden planter, which lets water drain more efficiently than porous Terracotta.
Peperomia
Peperomia is a low-maintenance houseplant that can be planted in any room. The glossy dark green leaves are attractive and help to cleanse the air.
Peperomias prefer moderately-light temperatures and warm temperatures but not direct sunlight. If the leaves are burning or discolored it is a sign they're receiving too much sun and should be moved into a shadier area.
Peperomias are epiphytic like their wild counterparts. They attach themselves to tree limbs and tall structures in order to gain access to brighter, indirect sunlight. They prefer arid, well-drained soil that is dry between waterings. If you find that the peperomia's roots are eroding out of its pot, it's time to repot. Use a houseplant mix that is free of peat and put it in a bigger container than the one you use to prevent root rot. Feed your peperomia with a general plant fertiliser every month during the summer.
Arrowhead Vine
The arrowhead vine (Syngoniumpodophyllum) is an evergreen vine that can be planted indoors, is a teeming climbing plant. It doesn't bloom, however it is an excellent houseplant for novices because it's easy to propagate from cuttings.
To make a cut in an existing arrowhead find the stem that is healthy, and carefully cut the stem to the base of the petiole. This is best accomplished using sterile, clean, sharp hand pruning shears.
Make sure to water your arrowhead regularly particularly in summer. Be sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings as the arrowhead plant is not a fan of humid soil. Winter is the only time they don't require fertilizer because the plant is in dormancy. This plant has calcium oxalate crystals which can cause a burning sensation if consumed, so it's vital to keep it out of the reach of pets and children. The Arrowhead vine, sometimes referred to as nephthytis or goosefoot, is a favorite among home gardeners because of its beautiful foliage and low maintenance.
Snake Plant
Snake plants, also referred to as Sansevieria are among the easiest to grow house plants. They thrive in low light as well as drought and are prone to a few insect problems. This plant is also great to clean the air in your home, converting CO2 into oxygen during the day and eliminating formaldehyde and benzene during the night.
Healthy snake plants have green leaves with yellow, cream, or white edges. Leaves that are droopy or flip over indicate overwatering or lack of light the thrips (small insects) or root decay.
Repot your snake plant into a container two inches wider when the roots are too crowded or when it is outgrowing its current pot. Choose the soil that drains quickly, and preferably with one third perlite or sand and one third peat. Fertilize every month during the growing season with an organic fertilizer in half strength.
Money Plant
Money plants are easy to grow and are considered lucky plants that bring prosperity to homeowners who take care of them. They also help in channelling the positive energy. You can give them to your friends and are an excellent way to wish them luck and prosperity. According to Vastu, and Feng Shui, these plants grow best when placed in the southeast corner of your home.
In addition to being a great air purifier in addition, the Money Plant is pet friendly and forgiving of less than perfect indoor conditions. It is important to monitor the plant's requirements for fertilization and watering regularly. If the leaves are turning yellow, it could be a sign the soil isn't draining properly or that the plant is being overwatered.
Money Plants are characterized by green leaves with long stems, and tips which are light brown. It is a low-maintenance houseplant that doesn't require any fertilizer or sunlight.
