Choosing Indoor House Plants
When selecting your home plants, look for healthy, healthy roots and foliage. Look over the leaves to determine whether there are any indications of pests or disease.
Many indoor houseplants are easy to care for and can be tolerant of low light conditions. Examples include snake plant (Dracaena or Sansevieria) also known as Mother-in-law's tongue, yucca elephantipes and coccoloba.
Cast Iron Plant
Cast iron plant (Aspidistraelatior) has oblong-shaped leaves that can grow up to 2 feet tall. It thrives in dim and shaded conditions, making it a good option for rooms that lack natural light. Its large dimension makes it an ideal accent plant. It can make a big statement without occupying a large space. This easy-care plant thrives in soil that drains well, and in areas that receive very little direct sunlight. It is tolerant of a broad range of climates, but avoid overwatering since this can lead to root rot. If your cast iron plant's leaves start to yellow, this is a sign it has been exposed for a long period to direct sunlight. By filtering the light, or moving the plant to a more shaded place will aid.
A variety of cultivars offer an array of striking color combinations and foliage patterns. Gold Spike and Goldfeather feature yellow stripes that run through their green leaves. Hoshi-zora's cast metal leaves are flecked with yellow to white dots that give it the appearance of being airbrushed. Snow cap cast iron ferns (Aspidistra crussula), with their all-year-round white variety are a great alternative.
Indoor cast iron plants are self-maintaining however, you may need to trim the leaves periodically to regulate the shape of the plant or eliminate dead or dying leaves. You may also need to trim the roots periodically when the clump becomes too big for the pot. Follow the instructions on the label to fertilize indoor plants using a liquid all-purpose fertilizer once a month during the summer and spring. Cast iron plants in outdoor areas require less frequent feeding. However, you can add general liquid fertilizer to the soil in spring when they begin to grow once more.
Snake Plant
Snake plants (Sansevieria), despite their spiky leaves, are surprisingly graceful and soft. They are among the most tolerant indoor house plants, able to withstand low levels of light and occasional droughts. They help keep your home's air healthy by absorbing toxic substances like formaldehyde, benzene and carbon dioxide.
Whether you choose a variegated 'Mother in Law's Tongue' or the tall, green 'Goldband Sansevieria laurentii These plants look stunning when used as table centerpieces or on desks. They can also be set near a fireplace in the indoor space or on a window sill where they will receive sun throughout the daytime.
Snake plants aren't susceptible to other issues indoors, except for over-watering. They are slow growers and don't need to be regularly repotted, however when they do outgrow their containers, use a potting soil with an excessive amount of perlite or sand in order to prevent the soil from becoming over-saturated.
If you do choose to repotte your snake plant, dig it up from its old container with a sharp knife. Then plant it again at the same depth it was previously planted in. Fill the remainder of the pot up with the potting mix designed for succulents and cacti.
It's best to keep snake plants out of reach of pets and children since the foliage is toxic when consumed. This is due to saponins, the natural compounds that are strong enough to cause vomiting and nausea in humans and animals in the event of consumption. Wear gloves whenever you handle the plant, and remove the berries from the stems.
Succulents & Cacti
Cacti and succulents are fascinating plants that can add personality to any space. They are adapted to conserve moisture in dry (xeric) and some have intriguing or grotesque designs with colorful flowers. This adaptation makes them appealing to a broad range of plant enthusiasts.
Cacti and succulents make great companion plants, whether they're grown in warm climates outdoors, or as house plants. They are often grouped in low bowls to create gardens. They can be placed in windows with sunny light. Be aware that these plants will thrive in bright sunlight and at least six hours of bright sunlight every day.
The prickly-pear cactus, commonly called the agave is a popular houseplant. It can also be used in landscapes. Other varieties include the agave mammillaria, and Echeveria. Many of these plants multiply by forming clusters of tiny baby cacti that grow around the mother plant, earning them the nickname "hens and chicks".
Many people use the term "cactus" as an umbrella term for all succulents. However, the term "cactus" actually refers to a particular family of plants in the genus Cactaceae. Cacti are only one of the 60 families of succulents found around the world.
They must be kept in a container with drainage holes, like all succulents and other cacti. They aren't tolerant of soil that remains wet, and can turn rotten or develop misshapen growth in conditions that aren't well-lit. Cacti and succulents require very little maintenance compared to other houseplant s. They thrive indoors and can be moved to the outside during the summer however, only in a protected location because of intense light levels that can burn their stems and leaves.
Monstera
Monstera Deliciciosa, or Swiss Cheese Plant, is one of the most well-known house plants today. It is an evergreen vine with wide, fenestrated green leaves with holes and splits that develop on the extending aerial roots. It is a great choice for indoors due to its ability to withstand high light and low humidity.
Monstera plants thrive in warm climates. In winter, however they must be brought indoors if temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Monsteras don't thrive in temperatures that are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you intend to bring yours inside, make sure you thoroughly check the plants for insects prior to moving them. Clean small house plants and leaves, check the soil, and repot as needed.
Indoors, Monstera deliciosa likes bright to medium indirect sunlight. Direct sun can burn leaves and harm the overall health of the plant. Avoid placing house plants common to heating or air conditioning vents as they can dry out the leaves. Keep the soil moist but not sloppy by watering regularly. It is recommended to use filtered or bottle water, particularly if you have hard water in your home. A humidifier or fine mister may aid in boosting the humidity level within your home as well.
Once the plant is replanted, think about adding an trellis or stake to the pot to ensure that your plant can grow once it is rooted. This is a great idea to increase the height of rooms and can attract positive energy from the ceiling to the spaces below. In feng shui, Monstera plant is associated with deep connections as well as honoring elders and respected individuals. It is believed to bring luck, good fortune and prosperity to those who take care to keep it healthy. In Chinese tradition, it symbolizes longevity.
Fiddle Leaf Fig
The fiddle leaf is among the most sought-after plants on the market. Its unique, elongated form and stunning leaves make it an eye-catching feature in any room of your home. However, it's important know that this plant is a little more demanding than other plants in regards to attention and care. This tropical beauty is native to a rainforest environment, so it requires bright sunshine and high humidity in order to thrive.
When watering, it's important not to overwater your FLF as this can cause root rot and other problems. Water your plant every week or every 10 to 14 days. When you water your fiddle leaf plant make sure you soak the soil until it reaches the point where it drips and then take the excess moisture out.
This plant can also be damaged by cold and drafts. Be sure to prevent this by putting your ficus in a place that is warm and protected from drafts. Misting the leaves of your fiddle-leaf fig with a spray bottle each day will ensure the hydration level, and also keep the foliage fresh.
In general, a fiddle leaf fig will inform you when it's ready for water. "The best method to determine if your plant is thirsty is to poking your finger into the soil," Mast says. "If you feel moisture at the least halfway point of your knuckle then your fig is good to go." If the soil is dry to the point of contact, it's time to water.
