10 Meetups About Exotic House Plants You Should Attend
5 Exotic House Plants to Add a Taste of the Tropics to Your Home

Bring the taste of the tropics to your home by incorporating these exotic house plants. Orchids, ferns, and palm trees make excellent exotic houseplants because they like moderate humidity and warm temperatures - typical of most indoor environments.

The tropical foliage of monstera delicciosa is also called hole leaf monstera, adds an exotic accent to any room. Another option that is exotic is the bird of paradise with its slim, distinctive blue or orange flowers.

Monstera

Monstera deliciosa or Swiss Cheese Plant is an exotic houseplant with large leaves. It adds an exotic look to your home. tall houseplants is an climber and can be trained to climb by moss cover poles inside to mimic the trees it clings to in its native Mexican and Central American habitat. However, it also performs well in a pot and can be kept hanging over the edge of a table or another surface.

Apart from its distinctive appearance, this tropical plant is simple to grow. Make sure that it is in direct, bright sunlight and a well-drained soil. It can tolerate low humidity, but will perform best at higher levels.

As its name suggests, this plant is famous for the holes and splits it displays on its leaves. These are referred to as fenestrations, and they appear as the plant grows. It is part of the Araceae family, as well as Pothos, Philodendrons, ZZ plants and many other popular household foliage plants.

Like other aroids, Monstera is quite forgiving in its growth and can be grown in both outdoor and indoor plant. It can even be grown in shade that is dappled, which are typical of its forest understory habitat.

The flowers of this plant look like corn ear and produce an incredibly delicious fruit that has been described as a mix of pineapple and banana. It is possible to consume the fruits raw or cooked. The fruit of this plant can have an effect that is laxative and it is therefore important to use moderation.

One of the things that distinguishes this tropical plant from other species of plants is its ability to stand up to cold temperatures. Most other aroids will quickly turn to mush in very cold temperatures, but Monsteras can withstand cold temperatures and flourish.

Like most aroids, Monstera must be watered sparsely and only when the top inch of soil is dry. Be sure to let any excess water drain out the drainage hole located at the bottom of the pot whenever you water. Like all tropical houseplants Monstera also requires a balanced liquid fertiliser. Use 1/2 teaspoon of balanced 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer in one gallon water to feed your Monstera plant each few weeks throughout the growing season.

Begonia

Begonias are easy to cultivate tropical treasures that add a burst of color to window boxes, flower pots and gardens. There are begonias available in bright colors and shapes that suit your style, whether you choose single- or double-flowered varieties. Begonias are a great alternative to other exotic houseplants since they bloom continuously during the growing season. They don't require any special care, except for watering every two weeks.

More than 2,000 species of plants belong to the genus Begonia with the majority having vibrant leaves and flowers. house plants online are natives of the tropics, however some species can be grown in cooler climates.

Tuberous begonias such as the well-known "Non-Stop" series are perfect for shady spots and outdoor containers. These begonias that are frost-sensitive develop from tubers that are either round or oval and have a strong habit of growth. They need sunlight and shade to thrive. However, they might not flower in very dense shade or in areas with hot, direct sunlight. Wax begonias are tolerant of full sun but will burn quickly in hot weather.

The majority of begonias don't require deadheading, but they can benefit from fall and spring pruning to stimulate new growth. They also do best when planted in loose, rich soil, such as an organic material or a light loamy mixture with slow-release fertilizer added.

If you'd like to propagate begonias, plant tubers, with the hollow side facing upwards, 6 to 8 inches apart in a shallow tray containing moist potting mix. Place the tray in a room that is dark and keep the mix moist but not soggy. After about 4 weeks, they should start to sprout. When they reach an inch tall, you can move them to a brightly lit space. Make sure there is no chance of frost before planting outdoors. Begonias can also be planted from seeds or plant wax begonias as transplants. These can be bought at greenhouses and garden centers.

Anthurium

Anthurium, also called the tail flower and flamingo flowers, adds an exotic tropical accent to any brightly lit room. It's easy-to-care for and blooms all year round. The epiphyte was originally a plant that grows on the surface of other plants, or in the air, anthuriums can be hardy and long-lasting houseplants.

The "flower" of the anthurium actually is a spathe. The protective sheath protects an extremely tiny flower inside. The flowers are available in red, pink or white and last for some weeks. The colorful anthurium is popular as a hostess gift, and it's also often used in wedding bouquets on Hawaiian and Pacific Islands.

Anthurium is a species of the genus Araceae, which contains more than 1,000 species of flowering plants. Some are well-known such as the hibiscus, orchid and poinsettia. Others are lesser-known, including the tulip tree and the Arum palm.

While big house plants is possible to grow anthuriums from seeds it can take up to four years before you can see any flowers. You can achieve faster results by cutting anthuriums of mature plants. Look for a well-established anthurium with roots that are compacted, and appear ready to be divided. Use a clean, dry knife to cut off a portion of the plant. Be careful not to harm the roots.

Anthurium that has been cut cleanly can be transplanted into a pot of slightly moist vermiculite. Place the cuttings in an area which receives bright indirect light and remains at 70F. If needed mist the soil and plant frequently and run a humidity machine close to it. Give the anthurium regular fertilizer, though don't apply too much as it can burn the roots.

Repot anthuriums every few years or when the root ball becomes too large for the container. To avoid shock, select the pot that is 20 percent bigger than the container in which it is.

Spray soap diluted on the leaves of your anthurium, then wipe them clean with a damp cloth. This helps the plant breathe and restores its pretty sheen. Anthuriums can be plagued by spider mites, but the use of a preventative pesticide will keep these tiny invaders at distance.

Coconut Palm

Coconut palm (Cocos Nucifera) is a tropical plant that grows all over the world. It is grown for its edible fruit. It is one of the most important and widely used agricultural plants in the tropics. It is believed to have originated in Indo-Malaya. The wood from the trunk can be used to construct bridges and huts. The fibers of shells or husks are used to make ropes. The coconut is a drupe, not a true nuts.

When the seeds make an audible sloshing noise when shaken the seeds are ready to be planted. The seeds are then set on their sides with the three eyes slightly angled upwards and then dug into the soil to about half the thickness of the shell. Germination can take a long time, but can be enhanced by high temperatures and humidity. After 6 months, the roots and shoots are ready for transplantation.

The plant is best designed for warm climates. It can withstand frost, but should not be exposed to temperatures that are below freezing because it can suffer damage. It needs plenty of sunlight, a sheltered position and a soil that is well-drained. Regular watering is necessary however, the soil should not be flooded. Fertilizing is also important and should be done using a fertilizer with an extremely high nitrogen content.

In the spring the palms produce fragrant flowers that smell sweet on slightly branched stems which are male and female coconuts. The flowers are protandrous, and male flowers generally open before the females open. The breeze pollinates the flowers. After 4-6 years the tree will start producing fruit.

For indoor cultivation, it's best to grow this exotic houseplant in a pot that has a rich, well-drained soil. It is a fan of sun however, it can tolerate light that is low. Repot the plant when it grows in a pot larger than its roots. It is vital to give the plant a thorough watering and to feed it with liquid fertilizer regularly. The Coconut Palm is generally pest-free however it is affected by a disease known as lethal yellowing, which there is no cure, and that can kill the plant.
