15 Reasons To Not Ignore Garden Plan
How to Choose a Garden Plant

Garden plants give color, structure and variety to outdoor areas. Perennials, shrubs and trees add interest to the garden all year long.

Many popular garden plants require sunlight to flourish. Learn about the importance of space, soil types and other garden features when deciding the best plants to plant in a sunny location. Also, read about the best ways to begin seeds and to transplant.

Shrubs

There's a plant for every garden, providing year-round structure as well as a diverse assortment of colors, leaves and fruits. They can be used as a ground cover as well as a backdrop to flowers or to form a hedge. Many are easy to maintain and provide an ideal habitat for wildlife.

They have multiple stems and are perennial woody plants. They don't die to the ground in winter, as many herbaceous plants do. They can be erect, like lilacs or forsythia, or they can rest flat on the ground, like the evergreen camellia. The height of a plant is usually less than 13 feet. However there are some experts who limit the height to 10 feet. Those that are taller are referred to as trees.

In general, shrubs are slower to grow than trees and have a more rounded form. They can be shaped with annual pruning or let develop naturally. They are ideal for small spaces in areas with limited space.

Many plants produce stunning flowers, including camellias, which can add a touch of elegance to the winter garden. Their beautiful blossoms come in shades of pink, white or red. Forsythia, azalea and flowering shadbush are able to add flowers to the garden in the spring, while the rhododendrons provide a range of scents and colors throughout the summer.

Low-maintenance plants include holly-juniper and Japanese boxwood, which can be used as a hedge, or to add a touch of color to the landscape. Inkberry plants provide stunning, deep green foliage and are a favorite of bees, which pollinate the flowers and create a sweet kind of honey, known as gallberry honey.

There are also plants that require little maintenance for their fragrance. They include chamomile and lavender. This herb is renowned for its relaxing properties. It can be utilized to decrease stress and anxiety and improve digestion. Mint is a low-maintenance herb that's popular for its medicinal properties and refreshing taste. Its antiseptic properties, in addition to its anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties, can help treat stomach upset. Its leaves can be made into tea to ease stomach the pain and indigestion as well as to ease minor cuts and scratches.

Trees

Trees have been revered for a long time and have played a vital role in many cultures. They can live hundreds of years and have a profound impact on the natural environment. They improve the appearance of gardens and homes by providing shade, shelter and food to wildlife. When choosing a tree, pick one that is sized with your house and site. Avoid trees that produce a mess of seeds and fruit or that shed regularly twigs and branches.

As with all plants trees produce their own food by a process known as photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide from air and water through their leaves, combining them with chlorophyll to form sugars and oxygen. This occurs in specific cells within the leaf, called stomates. Trees then transport these chemicals to the other parts of the plant through tubes known as the xylem and the phloem.

The crown is the highest part of a plant. It is comprised of leaves and branches and shields the roots from sunlight. The crown also absorbs sunlight's energy (photosynthesis) to keep cool and evaporate excess water through its leaves.

Because of their size trees have deep roots that aid in their stability in the snow and wind. They also help to hold soil in place, helping to prevent erosion. Trees are the backbone to our natural environment. They help moderate climates by absorbing and releasing CO2 as well as filtering water and eliminating the smells. They also absorb pollutants which reduces the amount of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides Ozone, and other harmful gases in the air.

Many tree species have distinct forms. They can have broad round crowns that provide dense shade or narrow, oval-shaped crowns that are more open and airy. Certain species have a broad and rounded crown, whereas others have a more egg-shaped shape. Examples include oaks, horse chestnuts and maples. Certain species have an open-headed, slender form with a canopy that looks like an umbrella, such as hackberries, elms, and zelkovas.

Trees are classified into three botanical groups - the ferns (including tree ferns) and gymnosperms like conifers and cycads as well as angiosperms that include flowering plants. Many of the characteristics that differentiate gymnosperms and ferns from other woody plants, such as their cambium or tuberous root systems, are also found in the other categories.

Vines

Vines can make a garden look more attractive and add interest to shady areas and hiding ugly fences. They soften the look of a structure or wall, and create a a beautiful frame for entrances or windows. They add color and bloom to the edges or steep bank of a steep slope. They can also be used to conceal an area that is used for use in utility and to block a powerful breeze from seating areas.

There are more than 30 types of vines. However they can be categorized into four major categories based on the way they grow. Clematis and honeysuckle as well as wisteria are twiners that work by wrapping around support. Twiners are also divided into two groups that twine clockwise, and those who twine counterclockwise. The ones that make use of tendrils which are modified leaves to join structures include creeping figs, Virginia creeper, and philodendron.

The same rules apply to planting ornamentals made of wood as well. Before choosing a plant take a look at the area of the plant including the soil's condition and light exposure. Once established, vines require regular pruning to keep their desired look.

Pruning should be performed at the same time as you fertilize. This will help you avoid the build-up of nutrient salts and encourage a vigorous growth habit.

The amount of pruning needed is contingent on the species, the surrounding environment and your level of energy. If you don't want to spend the majority of your time checking your trellises using herbicides or loppers, pick a moderately-growing vine such as Dutchman's pipe or crossvine. You can choose a fast-growing but hardy vine like American bittersweet. It produces bright red berries which retain their color throughout the winter landscape.

Use tie clips to train perennials such as sweet pea and clematis vines. They will remain in your garden for many years. Rubber ties are a good choice since they don't cut the stems when they expand. For annual vines, like runner beans, hyacinth bean, or morning glory tie them to the structure using strings or yarn that's not too tight. You can also use string or wire to secure the vines to a teepee if necessary. Just be cautious not to strain them too much.

Containers

Containers can be used by gardeners to add interest and color to the landscaping of their homes without occupying space in a patio or garden. Containers can be used to cultivate many plants, including plants, flowers, and shrubs. The most important thing is to know the requirements of the plant as well as the type of container needed. A container could be anything that holds soil and is sufficient in size to support the plant's roots and provide adequate drainage. This could include terra cotta pots, wooden half-barrels, window containers, baskets, buckets and even old gardening equipment or cooking pots.

Container plants require more frequent irrigation than plants planted on the ground. This is due to the small size of the root system and the drying effects of direct sunlight in summer afternoons. The containers need to have adequate drainage to prevent the accumulation of water that could lead to disease and rot.

The addition of organic material, such as coco coir peat or compost, to the bottom of the container will help keep moisture in the soil. The OM is also a source of nutrients. The plants will thrive when you water the pot regularly to moisten the soil.

The soil mix used to fill the container must be drained, especially in hot conditions. To improve drainage and keep soil texture, it is recommended to mix organic matter, such as broken leaves, rotted manure or sand with coarse granular materials like sand.

A trellis can be useful to support vines inside containers. This helps to prevent them from becoming too top-heavy, and falling over. It is a good idea to protect the containers from rain and wind, as they can be easily blown off or drenched on and turn muddy very quickly.

Because the soil inside the container is not rich in many nutrients, they should be fertilized regularly. This is best done during the initial soil mixture stage. During this process 1 cup of a general purpose organic fertilizer such as 5-3-4 or liquid fish emulsion should be added to the mix.
