The significance of a tiger Pillow does not end with the obvious.
A smoky black stripe on an orange-colored coat. White teeth that sparkle and a sharp eye. Long tail tucked into a robust body. If you look closely at this, you'll realize that it isn't just any animal it's a ceramic creature around 15 inches long was that was used as a pillow in the 12th century of China. Pillows were usually made of animals to deter evil spirits while sleeping. A tiger, as an instance, was an incredibly strong symbol during that time.


Pillows can also grant the person with special traits, as per traditional beliefs and superstitions. One instance is in a traditional folk medicine recipe that calls for filling pillows with herbs and other ingredients, then sleeping for a full year. The recipe claims that the user will sleep well consume more food, and gain wisdom during the time of the year. Another headrest is that comes from the Luba culture of Papua New Guinea. The female ancestors who decorated the pillow sheltered the hairstyle of its owner and positioned her head in the same way they supported their heads.



The Horniman Museum carries several similar pillows of tigers, but this is probably the oldest of them. The pillow was given to the museum by ethnographer Otto Samson and accessioned in 1951. tiger pillow was conducting fieldwork in China starting in 1929 therefore this pillow may be made at the same time.


The tiger's motif may have been put on the pillow to shield the owner from hot weather. This type of pillow was usually painted in vibrant colours. The color has faded and it's hard to tell whether this was the original.


A different possibility is that the tiger is meant to symbolize strength and power. These traits are crucial to anyone who sleeps particularly during stressful or anxious times. The tiger is also described as the King of Jungle which means it is a powerful animal.
