11 Creative Methods To Write About Easy Houseplants
Easy Houseplants That Don't Require a Green Thumb

Looking to add a pop of green to your home? These easy houseplants do not require you to be a gardener.

These low-maintenance plants require only a few minutes in indirect sunlight, an occasional wipe of the leaves and an application of iron fertilizer once or twice a month.

Ponytail Palm

Ponytail palms are a unique plant that look stunning in a variety of interior designs. They are easy to maintain and can thrive with a little neglect, so long as you don't overwater them. This plant that grows slowly is an excellent choice for new plant owners.

Pony tail palms are a tropical-looking plant that thrives in bright indirect light. They are also drought-tolerant and like warm temperatures. You can keep them in their nursery containers, but it is best to replant into a porous container. This will allow for better air circulation and lowers the possibility of root rot.

This low-maintenance species is not toxic to dogs, cats and horses. It's an excellent choice for homes with pets, or children. It is also a natural pest deterrent. However, it is susceptible to diseases like leaf streaks and bacterial spots, which are often exacerbated by high humidity.

This slow-growing plant requires little fertilization. However it is able to receive twice as much water-soluble plant feed in the spring and summer. Sometimes, the plant will produce offsets (pups) near the base. They can be separated and removed to propagate the Ponytail Palm Tree. Despite its name it is not a flowering plant indoors, making it difficult to create viable seeds. The brown leaf tips are common during winter and should be trimmed to maintain a fresh appearance.

Schefflera

The Schefflera (pronounced shuffler-uh) is among the easiest houseplants to care for. This tropical plant is known as the umbrella-shaped tree. It has green, splayed umbrella-shaped leaves. They are able to grow quickly in the right conditions and can be trimmed to fit your space. They also purify the air, making them one of the most well-known indoor tropical plants.

Like other tropical plants, schefflera requires bright indirect light to thrive. They can tolerate direct sunlight for a few hours, but too much exposure will cause burns to the foliage. If you don't have enough lighting in your home, you could add a high-output lamp. You can also place your schefflera closer to a window that receives morning or late afternoon light however, you must block the light using curtains.

Water a schefflera only when the soil surface is dry. tall houseplants could lead to root rot. If you notice drooping or yellow leaves, it could be an indication of the insufficient amount of water.

If you'd like to add Scheffleras to the collection, you can take stem cuttings of 6-inches from your existing plants during the summer. Place the cuttings between 1 and 2 inches deep in a container that contains Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix. Then, give the same basic treatment to encourage new growth.

Chinese Evergreen

Aglaonema is an indoor plant that can be found in virtually any indoor setting. In contrast to peace lilies and philodendrons that require lots of bright light, aglaonema is able to thrive in dim or medium-light conditions. It thrives under fluorescent lighting. Aglaonema grows slowly and can be planted on desks or tabletops at first, but will eventually become a huge floor plant.

The leaves of a glaonema are available in a range of patterns and colors, so you can pick one that is in keeping with your decor. Aglaonema "Lucky Red" has leaves that are green and hot-pink variations, while 'Siam Aurora' has dark green leaves highlighted by pink veins.

In general, aglaonema plant species prefer low to medium light levels but will tolerate brighter indoor lighting conditions, although the more colorful and variegated varieties might require a bit more brightness. Avoid exposing any aglaonema to direct sunlight as the sun's harsh rays can harm its delicate leaves. If you are growing an aglaonema at work be sure to cover the window. This will block out harsh sunlight.

As with other no-fuss tropical plant, Aglaonema thrives in warm weather but can't survive extreme cold breezes. It is recommended to water aglaonema on a frequent schedule, but be careful not to overwater it. Stick your finger into the soil to see when it is time to water. If it appears dry, it is time to add more water.

Calathea

Calathea is also called Goeppertia and Pinstripe Plant. It is a simple-to-grow tropical foliage plant. It is native to thick rainforests and jungles that are surrounded by trees in shady places. This makes it adaptable to bright indirect indoor light. However, it is important to ensure that it is not exposed to direct sunlight since it could cause burns to the leaves and cause the markings fade. The best method to avoid this is to move it around or shield it from direct sunlight, which is done by covering a windowsill a sheer curtain.

Calatheas prefer temperatures between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit and thrive in humid environments. They prefer filtered sun because they're used to dapples rather than constant sunlight. This is why a west-facing or south-facing window could be ideal for them, but it is important to shade it from direct sunlight.

Calatheas can thrive in their ideal conditions with just a basic watering schedule. It should be watered regularly, but not constantly. Placing your finger in the soil will help you determine when it is time to water. Additionally, a diluted fertilizer should be used in the spring and summer months.

Pothos

Pothos, also referred to as Epipremnum Aureum, is a tropical houseplant that is easy to maintain because of its trailing foliage. It is a favorite for macrame hanging baskets and planters but can be trained to climb up the wall or even along a tree. This fast-growing vine is very resistant to the elements which makes it a good option for novices or experienced indoor gardeners.

Pothos leaves are available in a variety of shades and patterns. Some of the most popular cultivars include 'Golden Pothos, which has a yellow and green variation; 'Neon' that has bright chartreuse leaves; and 'Marble Queen' which is gorgeously marbled with white. Pothos is easily propagated using stem cuttings that can be grown in either soil or water. To root the stem, cut a 4-6 inch length of a healthy stem that has a few leaves and just below the leaf node. Place the cut in a glass of water or moist perlite/vermiculite, which should sprout roots within some weeks. The rooted cutting should be placed in the container in a small size with the potting soil.

Pothos plants can tolerate low lighting conditions, but prefer bright indirect light. It should be watered when the potting mix is dry. Feed it with liquid fertilizer for houseplants every six to eight weeks. Avoid cold drafts as they will damage the leaves and slow the growth. If the Pothos plants become pot-bound remove the old soil and plant the roots into fresh soil.

Peperomia

Peperomia plants make a good choice for beginners, as they require minimal care and can be grown indoors. They are native to South America and love shaded areas, but do not require direct sunlight. They also prefer warm temperatures.

These simple houseplants come in many different styles and colors and certain varieties of Peperomia are interesting in their variations. Peperomia argyreia is often referred to as the watermelon peperomia because of its leaves, which resemble to the rind of a watermelon. Other varieties that are popular include P. polybotrya that has large, drop-shaped leaves. Then there's P. caperata, which has deeply quilted leaves that are wrinkled.

Peperomias are propagated by stem cuttings or leaf-petiole cuts. If propagating with cuttings it is recommended to use sharp and clean scissors and choose a mature plant that does not have flowers or buds. Cut a stem from the plant using the lower 3 4''-4 of leaves and take out any leaves that are below the leaf node that is the lowest.

Plant peperomias in a rich pots or a nutrient-rich mix. They don't need to be fertilized, but they can benefit from a little fertilizer every month or so, spread lightly around the edges of the plant. Overwatering can cause peperomias to become sluggish. It is best to let the soil completely dry before you water it again.
