In the United Kingdom, BSPT (British Standard Pipe Tapered) denotes threading design for a pipe fitting. The "BS" designation, representing British standard, is followed by "PT" - in this case compiling “pipe taper”. steel pipe elbow "B" points to its origin: Britain. There are two important types of BSPT thread available: Parallel (P) and Tapered (T). Distinguishing mark between the two varieties lies in the taper ratio, which for a Parallel thread is 0.9mm per mm (0.9°) and 1.5mm per mm (1.5°) for a Tapered one with a gradient of 3/4” per foot.
With the BSPT thread, the taper occurs at a grade of 3/4" per foot. The same angle applies to the NPT (National Pipe Taper) thread, however, in comparison it is shallower, amounting to only 1/16" per foot. Thus, the most notable point of divergence between these two types of threads lies in their respective tapers.
