Improving Reading Strategies: Implied Reading
We are improving reading strategies for work and school in this series of articles. Today we shall discover how to boost comprehension using implied reading.

Implied reading is information the writer expects one to know. It is almost always considered common knowledge. For example, read the following sentence: the person wore a blue suit. The writer expects one to know what is really a man. They expect one to know what is really a suit, and also what is the color blue. In fact, if you didn't have any understanding of your world you could not read. I want to explain.

When you read, the human brain searches to match the words on the page to the data it has stored in memory. Once you see the word man on page, the human brain searches for the meaning and you visit a picture of a guy in your mind. When you see the word blue, your brain recognizes and sees the colour. Sometimes implied reading could cause comprehension problems because folks have different maps.

Suppose you are reading the famous novel, "Moby Dick," and you also reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico which is in the desert. Imagine you've never travelled. You've never seen the sea, or been on a boat. Now imagine another person reading this same book who was simply born and raised in Portland, Maine. They have significant amounts of experience fishing in the ocean. Though it may be the same book, would both people experience the book precisely the same? Of course not! website will often cause major comprehension problems.

As you can see understanding the three types of reading can be an important factor in improving reading approaches for your day to day learning. In my next article, I am going to cover inferential reading, the highest level of learning.
