Ruth Asawa's wire sculptures have been captivating the world for almost seven decades. For 70 years, these levitating marvels of art have been drawing admiring audiences with their beautiful complexity and finesse.

Asawa's creative leanings revealed themselves early on. Born in 1926 the fifth child of an immigrant Japanese couple, living in Norwalk, California, the family worked a vegetable farm. Uncleared by her family's supportive impulses Asawa began her artistic career at an early age by selling to her schoolmates pictures she had sketched of the farm animals she grew up with.

Initially, Asawa had dreams of studying medicine, so she enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley. However, her interests changed after attending an art class led by renowned painter and educator Hans Hofmann - Asawa subsequently switched her major to art.

Motivated by her passion for learning, Asawa's journey led her to the bustling city of New York and the esteemed Black Mountain College during the 1950s. There, she encountered Josef Albers; he subsequently became a significant catalyst for her work. At Black Mountain College, Asawa's exploration of wire commenced - fascinated by the opportunity to flexibly contort it into various forms.

During her artistic journey, Senga Asawa ventured through a range of mediums and materials, eventually settling on metal and found objects for her innovative large-scale public sculptures. Across the country, these pieces are available for appreciation in many cities, with San Francisco being the hometown of the celebrated artist.

Favored for her entire career, Ruth Asawa's artwork has been displayed at single-artist shows throughout the world and kept in the collections of vaunted art repositories around the globe. Consequently, in 2006, Asawa was bestow the National Medal of Arts by President George W. Bush. Unfortunately, Asawa passed away in 2013 at age 87.

Nearly seven decades of wondrous artistry saw Ruth Asawa create timeless wire sculptures, which amaze and inspire onlookers with their intricate grace.
