Wellness Care for Your Pet
Wellness care is essential for your pet throughout its life, whether it's a puppy or an old animal. Kittens and puppies require regular examinations to check for growth and strengthen their immunity against common diseases.
Pet insurance plans typically provide pet wellness coverage as an additional benefit. However, the coverage for pet wellness is quite different from pet insurance in several ways.
Vaccinations
Vaccines are among the most important advances in medicine. They are believed to be responsible for saving more lives than all other treatments. They prevent diseases that could otherwise be fatal or cause prolonged and severe illness, pain, and death. In the majority of cases, prevention is more cost-effective and effective than treatment.
Immunizations can be a vital part of pet care, and they can aid in preventing serious illnesses in dogs and cats as well as humans. Vaccines are the preparations of dead or altered microorganisms administered into the body to trigger the immune system to react to invaders. This way, the immune system learns to identify and fight the disease-causing organism, without being subject to the more serious effects of infection or illness.
Puppies and kittens should receive a full series of vaccinations at the beginning stages of development in order to build an immune system that is strong and resistant to infectious diseases. Our veterinarian will advise the right vaccines for your pet based on their age and the lifestyle they lead.
The most important vaccines are rabies, distemper, and parvovirus. They are considered essential for all dogs and cats, as they guard against deadly diseases that can easily be transmitted to humans. The primary vaccines are administered in two injections at the age of a puppy or kitten, and then boosters every year.
Non-core vaccinations may be recommended depending on the risk factors and lifestyle. Dogs that visit grooming and boarding kennels, dog parks and training classes for instance, might need to be vaccinated.
All pets are generally advised to get the hepatitis A vaccine as well as the hepatitis B and C. These help to stop a variety of deadly diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. A combination vaccine called a DA2PP (or FVRCP) for cats or canines protects against the common infectious diseases which can be transmitted between the two species. The lyme disease vaccine which is recommended for dogs who are frequently in areas where deer are frequently encountered, shields them from the bites of the untruly named deer tick which can trigger the serious bacterial infection known as Lyme disease.
Fecal Exam
A fecal examination, sometimes called a fecal floatation, is a microscopic inspection of your pet's stool. This allows your vet to detect intestinal parasites like hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and giardia that are not easily diagnosed and can affect the health of your pet. They can infect other pets and family members.
A fecal sample may be collected in a variety of ways. Your veterinarian may employ the specialized fecal loop, which is placed into the rectum and pulled back to obtain the collection of a sample. This method is especially useful for identifying cysts and worms. Your veterinarian can also perform an smear that is direct, spreading a small amount of the pet's feces on a microscope slide. This test comes with the disadvantage that it can only be reliable when there is no cells or fat in the sample.
A centrifugal flotation test can be another method. This test the fecal specimen to determine the presence of parasite eggs by mixing it with a particular solution. The eggs then flounder and can be observed under a microscope. The advantage of this method is that it is more sensitive than a direct smear, however, the results are still dependent on the procedural details and specimen attributes.
The best way to ensure that your pet is not infected by intestinal parasites that may affect his health or be passed to other animals and family members is to conduct annual fecal tests. These infections can cause discomfort for your pet, and could even lead to more serious conditions requiring treatment. Certain intestinal parasites, like hookworms and roundworms are transferred to humans. This poses a serious health risk.
It is important to include fecal testing in your pet's routine for health care. All pets should have a fecal testing at least once a year. This is more frequent for animals that are puppies or living in an environment that is conducive to parasites. Intestinal parasites are a major cause of illness for pets that can cause diarrhea and weight loss as well as vomiting. In addition to detecting parasites, the fecal test can identify blood or other abnormalities which could be a sign of illness or an ongoing infection.
Dental Exam
Pet dental care is an important part of overall health. Without proper oral care teeth of pets can get infected, which can lead to other health issues, such as tooth decay, bad breath and even gum disease. These conditions start when tartar accumulates on the teeth and causes damage to the surrounding tissues. The buildup can also move through the bloodstream to other organs like kidneys, the heart, and liver. how to take care of pets can increase the risk of developing serious illness and trigger inflammation. Regular dental cleanings and at-home brushing helps keep your pet's dental health in check.
During the dental exam, our veterinarian will examine the mouth of your pet to look for indications of tartar and plaque. He or she will use a scaler to remove the tartar build-up and an instrument for checking the gum pockets line where periodontal disease starts. To examine the roots and bones of the teeth X-rays are taken of the entire mouth.
Dental exams are recommended at least every year, however more frequent exams are advised for patients with elevated risks for dental disease or are in their old age. Alongside a thorough physical evaluation, the vet will discuss your pet's diet, weight, and behavior with you. If you notice any changes in your pet, the vet will be able to provide helpful information about the reason for the change and suggest additional tests or treatments, if required.
Wellness plans can be a great way to save money and fund preventive treatments like dental cleanings and heartworm tests. These plans are similar to traditional pet insurance, but they pay for pre-determined medical expenses instead of paying for the entire visit. Our veterinarians are happy to review the different plans with you.

Parasite Control
Whether of the internal or external type, parasites are living organisms that feed off your pet, depriving it of vital nutrients. They can also cause severe damage to her organs and systems, leading to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. In extreme cases, certain parasites (such as heartworms) could even cause death. Although many believe that parasites are a necessary part of being a pet owner, this does not need to be the situation. Our veterinary team is versed in the types of parasites to look for in your area and can help you to understand how these bugs affect your pet and what you can do about them.
Responsible pet parasite management can help reduce the chance of spreading disease to humans and pets living in the home. This means administering preventative flea and tick treatment throughout the year, wearing collars to keep ticks away, and grooming your dog regularly, especially after she's been outdoors. Checking her coat for signs of a parasite infestation, such as scratching, chewing and licking, will aid in ensuring she is free of these irritants.
Internal parasites such as roundworms and tapeworms are usually acquired accidentally through the ingesting of parasite eggs that have been discovered in areas that are contaminated by the faeces of animals that have been infected. These parasites are also zoonotic, which means they can be transmitted from pets to people (and in reverse).
Fleas and ticks can infest any residence, even urban areas that have a large number of pets. Fleas can cause severe allergic reactions in pets as well as transmit vector-borne diseases like cat scratch disease (Bartonella), Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ticks can also be an issue in terms of causing painful itchy, and allergic reactions in pets as well as possibly transmitting vector-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and ehrlichia to humans.
At minimum, all shelter pets should receive a basic internal and external parasite control protocol at time of intake. This should include prophylactic treatments with at least an oral dewormer that is effective against roundworms and hookworms and an insecticide and tick preventative (Nemex and Strongid are the most commonly used products).
