Do You Know How To Explain Potted House Plants To Your Mom
How Potted House Plants Improve the Quality of Air

Introduce potted houseplants to the house to improve the air quality. Snake plants and Mother-in-Law's tongue for instance, can help reduce indoor ozone levels and eliminate VOCs, which trigger allergies and asthma.

Repot your houseplant if it looks stressed or shows signs of being too big for its container. Choose a larger pot and then add fresh potting mix.

Boston Fern

Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is a favored houseplant with lush green fronds that add an exotic touch to a room. These plants are known for their purifying properties in air which reduce pollution levels and improving the humidity of homes. This makes them a great addition to bedrooms which can help to improve sleep quality and decrease allergies.

This plant needs indirect light and moderate temperatures. It doesn't like to be exposed to direct sunlight cold, drafts or cold. Regular misting is recommended to increase the humidity of the air particularly in less humid climates. It doesn't require an excessive amount of pruning or fertilization, but the fronds may become dry and brown if the plant is overwatered or kept in a dry climate.

This plant grows in forests in soil that is slightly acidic and moist in shaded areas. It doesn't tolerate extreme heat or cold however, it is a good choice in USDA plant zones 9 to 11. This fern also thrives in humid conditions and can benefit from being placed near a kitchen or bathroom.

This is among the easiest to care potted ferns. It rarely needs repotting, and only when roots begin to grow around the base of the pot. Repotting should be done in the spring. The old potting mix can be used as a fertilizer (use the sodium solution of nitrate or Clay's Fertilizer). This plant is considered to be low maintenance because it does not grow fast and is not susceptible to a variety of diseases or pests.

Ponytail Palm

The ponytail palm, also known as the elephant's feet plant or bottle palm, grows in large clumps of green ribbon-like leaves that resemble ponytails. It is considered one of the easiest house plants to care for because its swollen trunk stores water and lets it remain dry for weeks without watering. It is a great option for those who have pets and children, as it isn't toxic to either.

Ponytail palms thrive in bright light but they can be tolerant of moderate light levels too. They need to be kept in pots with dry, well-draining soil. Repot them only after the roots start to encircle the pot and it is necessary to replace the pot, but don't overcrowd the roots.

Let the soil drain completely between waterings. Overwatering is a frequent issue with this type of plant as it can cause stem rot and yellowing leaves.

The palms of ponytails are vulnerable to insects such as mealybugs and spider mites. These pests can be controlled using soaps and oils for horticulture. It is also possible for them to cause fungal problems and stem root rots.

Areca Palm

Areca palms are easy to grow and maintain as long as they have plenty of bright sunlight. They can be grown outdoors and indoors in warm temperatures, but must have a good humidity level. The brown or yellowed leaves as well as tips could indicate that your plant requires more moisture.

Water your areca palm when the soil's top inch is dry to the touch, but don't allow the compost to become soiled. You should ideally use rainwater or distilled to water your plants, as they are sensitive to fluoride.

Repot your areca palm every two to three years or whenever you feel that the roots are getting crowded. This will also eliminate any salt deposits that have accumulated in the pot, and are hindering the plant from growing.

Areca palms are said to purify the air by absorbing toxic gasses. According to NASA's Clean Air Study, these plants are effective at eliminating acetone, toluene formaldehyde, and xylene. These toxins can be released by paints, dyes solvents, vehicle exhausts and smoke from tobacco wood and paraffin stoves, and many more. Inhaling these gases can cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness and even liver damage in high doses. The palm of the areca is a great option to cut down on the toxic gases in your home and office.

Dragon Tree

Dragon trees (Dracaena marginata) look fantastic as a stand-alone plant or when combined with shrubby and trailing plants in an indoor plant stand. They are among a few tropical houseplants which can withstand different levels of light and temperatures. They can survive low humidity and dry indoor air, which would kill the majority of plants. Make sure to stay clear of overwatering which can lead to root decay.

Slow-growing slow-growing Dragon Plant's slender stalk is complemented by crown sword-like leaf that has an edge of red. It's an ideal choice to fill narrower spaces. They are easy to care for. They thrive in typical room conditions, able to tolerate dry indoor air and low levels of light that can be deadly to most other plants.

Repot only when the roots become congested. You can tell this by the rate of growth and the color of the roots. The most obvious sign is if there is little or no new root growth.

As your Dracaena grows older it's common to see dead leaves fall off. You can also help to tidy your plant by cutting the long, straggly stalks using a pair of sterilized pruning shears. Sterilize the shears using a rag doused in rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide before use. Due to the saponin-rich content in this plant and other members of the family, it's moderately toxic to cats when eaten. The symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea and crying. They can also cause weakness, a higher heart rate and a loss of appetite.

ZZ Plant

ZZ plants are a favorite houseplant. They are commonly found in homes and offices due to the fact that they look attractive, are easy to maintain and help keep indoor air fresh. These plants grow slowly to a height of two to three feet and are a great alternative for areas where other plants could outgrow their containers. Their dark green shiny leaves reflect sunlight and brighten up a room. They bring a tropical ambiance to rooms, and are a major component of Feng Shui.

They thrive in indirect light that is medium to bright but can also tolerate lower levels of lighting. Because they are tolerant to low humidity, it is not necessary to mist their soil or leaves. If the plant starts to wilt however, it could require repotted into larger containers. It is also essential to get rid of any old, yellow or brown leaves and stems to keep the plant healthy.

Overwatering the ZZ plant can lead to root rot. Water the plant whenever the soil's top feels dry. This happens typically every two weeks or so. They don't have to be fertilized as often as other plants. However, they can benefit from an foliar spray of plant food in liquid form every now and then. Spraying neem or other natural pesticides on plants that show signs of pests will help keep them healthy.

Tillandsia

The Tillandsia (also known by the name Bromeliads) is a vast group of plants with more than 650 species. There is a wide selection of plants to suit your home decor. They are popular in terrariums, but they can also be used to accent wood, driftwood and magnets. They thrive in warm, indirect sunlight. After cool house plants begin to blossom. This is a good indication that you've taken care of them but also the end of their lives since they only bloom once. The plant will then begin to lose its vigor and eventually end up dying. This is normal and a part of the process of growing. When the flower spikes die off the mother plant will begin to produce offsets, or 'pups. They can be trimmed and treated in a separate manner.

Most homeowners grow tillandsia indoors, because they are easy to care for. They are epiphytes, meaning that they do not have extensive roots. Instead, they absorb water through their leaves. This makes them very prone to overwatering and rot. A good rule of thumb is to mist them with room temperature, filtered water at least once every week, but more often when your home is extremely humid. If they appear dehydrated their leaves will curl and shrivel.
