Whether you're a first time camper or you've been camping for awhile, in most cases you can still find places to camp that are fairly close to home. For the initial timer a nearby campground is good because you will inevitably forget something. The closer you're to home the easier it is to obtain what you've forgotten, and if you really can't stand it after a day or two, it is easier to reunite home. There are plenty of campgrounds near cities and towns that give the feeling to be far away from your home when you are really only a few miles away. Finding these is often as easy as looking in the phonebook or going online and searching for them. The nice thing about close campgrounds is that you could drive by and check them out before ever making reservations or going there.
A negative first experience can change a first timer away from camping for good. Make certain the weather will undoubtedly be nice when you are and perhaps you may also drive through and pick which site you need, provided that you do not plan to stay over any occasion weekend or throughout a busy time period for the campground. In those cases it is usually first come first serve. Campgrounds range from the privately owned, to county, state, or national parks. If you are tent camping, State and National parks are beautiful. While they don't offer a lot of the amenities of an exclusive park they give you a feeling of being definately not home and will often have some very pretty sites. Photo opportunities abound at these parks aswell. Sate and National parks are best for RVer's as well unless you mind dry camping.
Most of these parks do not offer hook-ups for RVs and many have length restrictions. Be sure to look into that before driving there. It is important is to have fun! Take the kids, the dogs, plenty of food, also keep in mind the pillows!
