types of house plants are a part of the philodendron, also known as snake plant. They have bands of color on their long leaves. These tropical houseplants thrive in low lighting conditions.
Croton
The vibrant, diverse markings on croton leaf can add visual interest to any room. This exotic house plant is known for its fiery colors, but the variety in sizes and shapes makes it a standout on its own.
This exotic plant can be grown either indoors or outdoors. The narrow leaves are flecked with greens, reds, yellows, and purples creating an kaleidoscope.
Bring it inside during cold snaps. Crotons are prone to lose its color when exposed to cool temperatures or drafts. It is also prone to insect activity. Check it regularly and spray horticultural insecticides as required.
Fittonia
Fittonia is a striking, deep-green foliage that is adorned with pink, white or red veins. It can lighten a dark space and looks amazing in an Terrarium.
Like many tropical house plants It thrives in warm temperatures and high humidity. Place it in a warm, humid space away from drafty windows or heaters that can dry the air.
It should be replanted each year. When it starts to look unnatural, trim the tips to encourage bushier growth.
As with most tropical plants nerve plants need a weekly application of a liquid fertilizer designed for houseplants during the growth season. It is recommended to apply a balanced 5-5-5 fertilizer that is diluted to half strength. It is also a great choice for a humid environment, so mist the leaves or use an air-tight tray to keep the high humidity around it.
Calathea
Whether you opt for the bright green pin-stripe calathea, or the peacock plant that has dark green, purple and silver brush marks, these exotic house plants look stunning as centerpieces for tables. Additionally their large oval leaves make excellent floor plants that can be placed on low plant stands. Calatheas thrive in moist air (between 50 and 80 percent humidity) however, they do not thrive in soil that is wet. They do well in a well-draining potting mix consisting of 2 parts peat and 1 part coco coir and some orchid bark.
Water calatheas once a week when the top inch of soil is dry to touch. By using filtered or rainwater instead of tap water, you can prevent the accumulation of salts and chemicals which could harm the plant. This is particularly important during winter, when the growth of the plant slows down. This is also a good time to feed the plant with a liquid fertilizer diluted to 1/2 strength.
Red-edge Dracaena
Red-edge Dracaena offers a striking tropical look to your home. Sometimes, it is mislabeled as a palm, this plant has slender stems or canes that are adorned with clumps or clumps of long, thin green leaves, trimmed in yellow or dark red.
Like all dracaenas, it is a great indoor houseplant and is easy to care for. They prefer bright indirect light but are tolerant of low lighting conditions. They prefer a well draining potting mix, but may require fertilization on occasion. Root rot, brown tips or margins and insect infestation are common problems.
These plants are known for their ability to purify air. According to NASA's Clean Air Study they are particularly effective in removing benzene (produced by smoking cigarettes, synthetic substances and car exhaust) as well as formaldehyde, xylene and trichloroethylene out of the air. It is also easy to propagate the plants from cuttings. This can be done at any time during the growing season. Simply dip them into rooting hormone, and then put them in a pot filled with damp soil.
Aluminum Plant
Pilea cadierei (commonly known as aluminum plant or watermelon pilea) is an exotic houseplant that is an mounded mound of embroidered green leaves with distinctive silver stripes. It's a very attractive and easy to grow plant however it can be susceptible to infestations of spider mites.
It is a fan of moderate humidity and indirect, warm light. The temperature should be 60-75 degF (16-23 degC).
It is a low-maintenance tree that likes to be moist, but the top quarter of an inch of soil must be dried before watering it once more. In the growing season of active growth, spring and summer, it is important to water the soil enough to keep soil damp. In the dormancy time of fall and winter the soil is less watered. It is a good idea to apply a liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Cuttings from stems can be used to help propagate this plant in a vegetative manner. The roots are easily placed can be found in a mixture of peaty and loamy soil.
Waffle Plant
Hemigraphis alternata, also known as a purple waffle plant is a metallic green-purple plant with a unique puckered texture. It grows well in hanging pots or in a terrarium. It can be grown outdoors, but it is less tolerant to cold temperatures than other house plants.
Hemigraphis alternateta thrives in bright indirect light and high humidity, much like it does in its native equatorial rain forest. You can recreate this natural environment by misting your Hemigraphis Alternata with distillate water or placing it on a tray of purified water and pebbles.
You can cut back Hemigraphis alternata when it gets large to encourage bushy growth or to enhance the visual appeal. Apply an insecticide, or a mixture of warm water and Neem oil, to eliminate mealybugs if it is susceptible. Hemigraphis Alternata can be propagated by stem tip cuttings ranging from 4 to 6 inches that are taken in the spring and summer.
Rex Begonia
Begonias thrive in the indoors and are a great choice for those with large, sassy leaves. Rex begonias have distinctive veining and ruffling along with streaks and splotches in an assortment of greens, white silver, reds and pinks.
These vibrant plants require a regular watering schedule. Water the plant as soon as the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid water pools, which can cause root rot.
Make a mixture of 50% potting soil and 25% peat moss, coco coir or orchid bark to create a light, porous texture to the soil. This mix can also help the begonia to retain moisture. If you have a problem with mildew, cut down on the amount of water that your begonia gets and then move it into a brighter space to get rid of the mold. Mealy bugs can also appear on your begonia; soaking a cotton ball or swab in alcohol will help eliminate them.
Alocasia
Alocasia"Black Velvet" is a variety of Alocasia that has striking, greenish-black leaves that are adorned with prominent veins, resembling scales. popular house plants are whitish or even purple tint. This creates a striking contrast to the foliage. This variety is suited to growing indoors year-round or outdoors in warmer climate zones 4 to 8a during the summer months.
This tropical beauty is thriving with bright indirect light, which helps to prevent the leaves from becoming scorched. Ideal is a bright and sunny window, however many varieties can tolerate filtered or dappled light.
The soil should feel damp but not spongy. A light all-purpose feed is suitable once a month, but do not feed in winter, when the plant is entering dormancy. Be on the lookout for mushy or brown roots that may be a sign of a deficiency in nutrient. Root rot is a common occurrence in Alocasia and could be fatal for the plant.
Bromeliad
Bromeliads add a splash of color to rooms where a variety of house plants may struggle. They're tropical and thrive best when a humid and moist environment is provided. cool house plants can be easily cultivated through regular maintenance and their vibrant colors can make dull spaces look more vibrant.
They produce large, vibrant "flowers," called bracts which are actually leaves that attract pollinators. The real flowers of the plant are hidden inside bracts and will only appear once the flower has been fertilized.
As they develop, the plant produces offshoots which look like miniature versions of the parent plant. These pups can be propagated to create new bromeliads. They require the same care as the parent plant, which includes watering. Avoid using hard tap water as it can spot the foliage. Use rainwater, or filtered water when you can. This is essential for bromeliads growing in pots.
Hedgehog
The hedgehog is the smallest animal of the mammalia group, Animalia. The nocturnal mammal is a cool quills that won't hurt. They share a common ancestor with pigs and shrews and are among the oldest mammals to exist on earth.
In the wild they are omnivorous, eating frogs and toads and also mushrooms, grass roots and fruits. When scared the hedgehog can turn into a ball of spiny hairs. Only rare houseplants can get the ball to open.
If you see an animal on the ground, you can put it back in its home or cover the area with natural material. If you need to take it away from its habitat and put it in a large jar away from your bedroom. Make sure you provide as much protection as you can. They must be kept in an environment that is warm (73-80 degrees).
