Cool House Plants That Will Brighten Up Your Room
It's not always possible to cover every inch of your home with greenery but a few interesting plants can add that extra spark to any space. We've gathered some interesting house plants that are guaranteed to attract attention with their unique flowering and growth patterns.
Try an Madagascar dragon with wavy leaves to create an authentic jungle vibe in a small area. Beautiful palms also look amazing in bright indirect light.
Philodendron
Philodendrons are easy to take care of and can provide an exotic look to your home. They can tolerate dry conditions and don't need much light. If you're looking for a plant to make your room more inviting take a look at the Lemon Lime Philodendron, with leaves that start out pinkish and change to a neon lime green and yellow color.
This climbing variety can be as long as 2 feet in the wild and exhibit an almost plastic patina. It is also known as the Naugahyde Philodendron because of its similarity to fake leather. It can be grown either as a cascading or upright plant.
Horsehead Philodendron is another option. It has deep green leaves that have an appearance reminiscent of horses, but with the ears on top and the nose down below. It is best used as a climbing plant with a post that it can attach to. However, you can also grow it upright.
The upright varieties of philodendron are usually a little slower to grow and take up less space. They usually have larger leaves and are available in a wide range of striped or variegated colors and varieties, including the Snake Plant, which has a ruffled leaf that looks like a slim version the pothos plant.
Anthurium
Anthurium flowers last a long time and are beautiful. They are easy to care for and make a lovely gift or centerpiece for any table. They are symbolic of love, affection and friendship. They also represent longevity and are a popular choice for weddings.
This tropical plant needs bright light in order to bloom, but not direct sunlight, as this could cause the leaves to dry out and develop brown patches. The best place to plant it is a curtain-filtered sunny window. Maintain the soil evenly moist all through the fall, and slightly drier in winter. Overwatering can be a major cause of leaves turning yellow. Repot anthurium plants every two years to allow new air roots to form.
Anthuriums grow well indoors with temperatures of 75 F and high humidity. If the relative humidity falls to less than 50%, spray the plants with water several times per week or make use of a humidifier.
The 'Flamingo Flower' 'Hawaiian Heart' or 'Painters Palette' are a few common names for anthurium. Its flowers come in shades of pink, red white, purple, and bi-colors, such as green/pink and white/red. The 'fluff on the stem' is actually a spathe. It protects the tiny flower on the spike. The spathe is available in different shapes and colors.
Lucky Bamboo
Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is a cool-house plant that can be grown in soil or water. rare houseplants in soil should be planted at least one inch deep, and those in water should be kept filled to the top of the container. This plant likes bright indirect lighting. If you notice a brown tint on the edges of its leaves after putting it close to windows, move it to a more shaded spot. The lucky bamboo that grows in water needs to be fertilized every two months with an ineffective liquid.
house plants that clean the air used to grow lucky bamboo should be changed frequently to prevent stagnation and the buildup of bacteria that could harm roots, stems, and foliage. The water should be filtered or distilled, since tap water can contain chemicals that could harm the plants.
This plant is said by some to attract prosperity and wealth. Place it in the fame and reputability area of your living or family room, or add to your dining table centerpiece to boost wealth energy. Two stalks of bamboo symbolize love, so you can even use this plant to encourage a happy marriage or relationship. This plant is also commonly called the Feng Shui love charm.
String Plant
Ceropegia woodii, also known as a string plant (also called string of pearls), is a cool house plant that thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The plant has bizarre pea-shaped leaves, which give it a unique look. It's a great addition to hanging baskets and terrariums.
The string plant is an excellent option for those new to houseplants because it requires minimal care. It is also a good alternative for those who are not able to maintain plants outdoors because it can withstand light frost.
Contrary to other succulents, string plants prefer dry air to high humidity. Avoid placing it near drafts coming from windows or appliances. They can cause delicate foliage to fall.
Cut the vines down If you notice that your string plant has become unbalanced, with spindly leaves and large gaps in between the leaves. This kind of plant is susceptible to overwatering and should be watered only when it feels dry.
Be aware that the sap from pearls in a string can be harmful to pet and human beings. Consumption of the sap could cause dermatitis and mild gastrointestinal symptoms. It is best to keep this plant out of reach of pets and children.
Staghorn Fern
Staghorn Ferns are epiphytes that attach themselves to the canopy of trees in the rainforest. As such, they do not require soil to grow and can be positioned on a variety of surfaces within the home. These unusual foliage plants can be used to anchor airplant collections, accent orchids, or stand alone as an eye-catching statement piece. They appear as if they've come from outer space or from the ocean.
In addition to their stunning appearance, staghorns Ferns are safe for pets and children. They're also a great way to give a natural look to your living space.
To keep a staghorn fern healthy you should mist it frequently using water that is filtered or rainwater that has been allowed to sit for a little so that the chlorine will evaporate. This is particularly crucial during dry and hot weather.
Fertilize your plants every month with liquid fertilizer that has been dispersed and balanced. You can also increase the humidity of the plant using a humidifier or a tray containing wet pebbles. While staghorn ferns don't take drought well like other houseplants it is still important to avoid excessive watering. Root rot can result from too much water. You can prune the dying or dead fronds, but don't remove the brown shield fronds that are vital for reproduction.
Ficus
Ficus benjamina is one of the most stylish house plants. It adds elegance and freshness to your home. They are versatile and often found in hanging baskets, climbing trellis or on tabletops. Silver Cloud ficus has green leaves that are bordered with white and is a wonderful plant for hanging baskets or tabletop. Burgundy Rubber Plant is a different type with deep-green, burgundy-colored leaves when grown in bright sunlight. There are cool house plants : weeping fig and the fiddle leaf that grow into small trees with dark green leaves with lighter veins.
Be aware that ficus can quickly outgrow their pot and household and therefore need to be repotted regularly. When repotting ficus, use a larger container with a top-quality soil. Avoid overwatering. Ficus can become waterlogged and develop brown roots. The best method to determine whether your ficus needs water is to stick your finger in the soil and see whether it's dry.
It is not tolerant of abrupt changes in light, humidity, or moisture. It could shed its leaves when you move it from room to room. To prevent this, place it in a place that will receive moderate to bright indirect sunlight.
Swiss Cheese Plant
Monstera Deliciosa is also referred to as Swiss cheese Plant and has perforated leaves. This epiphyte, also known as Mexican breadfruit, split leaf philodendron or ceriman is native to the southern Mexican rainforests. It is most productive when it has a bit of space with indirect light and a place to grow. A large, mature Monstera plant produces fruit that tastes similar to an assortment of fruits or a mixture of pineapple and banana.
This plant is a climber, so it will do well in a pot with drainage holes or a Trellis. To encourage this, loosely connect the main stem to an moss stick or stable pole. This is akin to the natural environment in which it evolved by climbing mossy trees and other structures in the jungle.
Swiss cheese plants grow best in bright indirect light. Watering is not necessary however they must be kept in good condition. Water the plant only when the top inch or two of soil feels dry. To encourage faster growth, feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer at least once per month, using a diluted mixture. It is crucial to stop feeding your Monstera plant over the winter when it is not actively growing.
