The EMFIT Tonic-Clonic Seizure Movement Monitor is a seizure alert device that will sound an alarm when a person with epilepsy experiences a generalised tonic clonic (GTC) seizure. This will alert the caregiver to the event, giving them the confidence that they will be able to respond to a fit in time and provide the appropriate care.
A bed sensor mat is placed under the mattress of a sleeping patient who is at risk of GTC seizures, which detects micro-movements associated with a nocturnal seizure and raises an alarm. The control unit records the time duration, duration and location of any abnormal movements.
Whether it can be effective for people with epilepsy depends on several factors including the type of seizure, the frequency of occurrence and the sensitivity of the alarm. There are a variety of different devices that can be used to detect seizures, although their detection rates vary widely.
False-positive rates are also an important concern as they can be difficult to measure and may not be reflected accurately by EEG monitoring. There are also issues around missed seizures and inaccurate reporting by carers who may report a seizure when it has occurred, but not when it hasn't.
