The triple bill that included Pool Kids PUP and Beach Bunny on Tuesday (5/23) at The Rooftop was the epitome of Indie-punk. Pool Kids from Florida, an emo-influenced band that's been around for some time started the evening with their lively anthems. Beach Bunny then wowed the crowd with their adorable power pop hooks and alt-rock guitars. They also promoted their merchandise extremely hard, handing the crowd stickers as well as signing autographs. The headliners - -- whose debut album was one of our favorite 2022 releases -- came out to applause from the crowd.


Beach Bunny is in great spirits, despite being in her studio during a warm spring day. beachbunnymerch eats a bag of beignets and splits them between the band's guitarist Matt Henkels, bassist Jon Alvarado, and producer Sean O'Keefe. Sean O'Keefe is a Midwesterner at birth has a warm and genuine demeanor in spite of his work on hits for Fall Out Boy and Hawthorne Heights.


Beach Bunny's music and energy are contagious. The band's giddy, indie-pop style is fun and immediately catchy and has lyrics that address the struggles of teenagers and their fears that are timelessly relatable. The slick, polished style of the group is lively and energetic, but the members are all simple children who were hardworking when they were children. Trifilio was a cashier at her local pizza shop, Henkels managed a Panera Bread and Alvarado served Whoppers for Burger King.



Beach Bunny's latest track, "Scream", is their most ingenuous yet. The track features a pulsing bass synth line and a chorus that changes from a low-note vocal pronouncement that reaches a powerful final sentence scream. Throughout the session O'Keefe alters the mix live to find the perfect mix of clarity and EQ to reflect the band's natural enthusiasm.


Trifilio is a Beach Bunny member since 2004 is aiming for the highest note she is able to achieve during the last rendition of her song. She hits the note. A huge smile is spread across her face as she gives O'Keefe her thumbs up. The band is nearing completion making their new album Emotional Creature. It will be released on Mom+Pop Music on July 22. The band has stepped up their game, while still remaining true to the fun energy for which they're well-known. This album is bound to attract more attention from their faithful fans. But will they know how to handle the sudden public attention?
