《六國論》是一篇借古諷今，以警惕當時宋朝統治者的文章。宋朝建立之初，內憂外患，對外燕雲十六州被後唐石敬瑭割讓給契丹，令中原削弱了抵抗外族入侵的條件。對內實行「強榦弱枝」的中央集權政策，重文輕武，甚至由文人掌管軍事，令「主和」成為基本的國防政策。再者，自漢朝「獨尊儒術」以來，對外族多採取懷柔政策，宋室對外實行綏靖政策，每年向契丹、西夏繳納大量銀兩、絹等物資，國力大損。因此，蘇洵借題發揮，寫了《六國論》，警惕當時宋朝統治者，以歷史借鑒，切勿重蹈六國滅亡的覆轍。
