What started as a visual fascination in the city's bricked-up windows has evolved into an investigation into the role that light and air contribute to our well-being. The exhibition, Daylight Robbery, features 80 photographs of windows that are blocked in the city.

The Great Fire of London was a significant moment in the history of window design. This resulted in a change in the design of windows and the development of sash windows.

What is a window?

A window is an opening constructed in a wall, door or roof to let in air and light. It is usually covered and spanned by panes of glass, which are mounted to allow opening and closing. A window may also be described as an aperture for windows or window light, or window pane.

Sash windows are the most well-known type of window found in London. They are vertically opening windows which open via a sliding mechanism. They are still a common feature in many older properties but they are not as common in newer builds. Modern double-glazed windows are typically made from uPVC and can be opened the same way as traditional sash windows but with much improved insulation.

Sash windows are distinctive. They were developed because of the narrow streets in London and the tight-packed buildings. They are distinguished by two sashes that move up and down within the frame and overlap when they are open. The sash's movement is supported by a system of weights and pulleys (known as counter balances) which can be hidden or exposed in the frame.

Sash windows can be opened by sliding them open or by cranking them up like doors. They can be single-hung, double-hung or casement. Casement windows open outwards and may have one or more sashes that are fixed in place or tilted to help with cleaning. There are also a few casement windows which are mounted on hinges, allowing the window to swing in and out, similar to an awning window, or can be opened with a crank mechanism.

It is easy to see why sash windows have become extremely popular throughout the years. But, they have their flaws. One of the major issues is that it could be difficult to keep them secure in the face of modern security issues. We recommend that you replace your old sash window with the latest tilt-and-turn models that are more effective in keeping intruders away.

The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London was an enormous blaze that swept through the city centre on September 2nd, 1666. When the fire was finally completely slowed down on Thursday, the 6th, only four-fifths the city remained standing. It destroyed 13,000 homes, 89 churches, and 52 Guild Halls. A large number of people were homeless. The fire was believed to be the result of an Pudding Lane bakery. The fire quickly spread due to warehouses that were filled with material that was combustible and a strong easterly wind. It is estimated that around 16 people were killed.

After the fire, Charles II began rebuilding the city. He also built wider streets and made sure that buildings were built with brick instead of timber. As a result, the city was significantly less crowded.

Sash windows are a classic part of London's architecture, and have been around for hundreds of years. They are well-known because they provide a winning combination of traditional looks and modern technology. It took them a while to reach where they are today.

Despite their popularity the traditional sash windows do not always give the best impression in modern times. They are known for letting draughts in and are difficult to open or close and having their mechanisms clogged. It's not really known who invented the sash window, although English craftsmen hold the most claim of being responsible. The exhibition does have its faults, most notably in the claim that "many" of the houses included had their windows smashed off to get around the Georgian window tax (and not just because of an overall dislike of the tax). It also doesn't consider the complexity of health issues, particularly health, following the introduction of the tax on windows and during the so-called 'lockdown' period.
