Apple's darkly beautiful songs that dealt with issues such as addiction, depression sexual assault and mental illness were renowned for their grim realist tone.


Apple's eccentric, often violent shows have become a signature of her career. Her speech that was unscripted at the MTV VMAs in 1997 -the moment she famously stated, "This world is bullshit" caused media hostility and arguably created her "crazy lady" persona. She continued to make use of her platform to speak out for women's rights as well as equality, however her music began to shift towards more electronic and pop music and she took off from the music industry in 2004.



Apple's return in 2012 with The Idler Wheel was her most successful album to the present. It was clear that Apple was taking back her rightful spot she earned in the modern American music landscape. Apple was refreshingly new and a force to be reckoned with, and her tangled songs spoke to the complexities and emotional abstractions that have become so prevalent in contemporary music.


Apple's intensity, ferocity and power are elevated to new heights on Fetch the Bolt Cutters. The album is a raw export from the inside of her head, where her voice extends and loops, before changing into Vipassana vocal chants and creepy surreal vocals. She fights middle school the rapist and bullies, permitting her dog to lick her cheeks.


The result is a collection unlike similar to any other. It's raw and untamed. Although it may not be in sync with the current style of pop music - and it isn't a perfect fit for everyone - Apple's songs are still unnervingly beautiful and honest.

Fiona Apple hasn't released an album for eight years, but Fetch the Bolt Cutters seems like an undeserved return. The record is an aptly-timed and intense collection of songs that, even though they aren't suited to every radio playlist they are competent to be able to fit comfortably alongside the likes of Billie Eilish, Kesha and Lady Gaga. Fetch the Bolt Cutters is like nothing Apple has done before and is instantly recognized as a work that only she can develop. Fiona Apple Fisherman Hat 's a raw, erupting and tender album that's surprisingly suitable for our turbulent times.
