A tonic stage of seizure is an abnormal electrical activity occurring in the brain. It is followed by a clonic phase. The tonic phase is typically characterized by synchronous spikes of medium to high voltage. This stage can last for as long as 20 seconds.
Seizure disorders can be diagnosed through clinical examination and laboratory tests. For some, medication is necessary. Others require more than one medication. These are usually administered by a healthcare provider.
In the tonic stage of a seizure, neurons fire at a fast rate. During the clonic phase, firing rates of these neurons decrease. They also become highly synchronized. Synaptic depression occurs because of the altered firing rate.
People having tonic-clonic seizures are unaware of what is going on. Because of this, they may be confused or frightened. Often, they lose control of their bowels or bladder.
As with any medical problem, it is important to get help if you or a loved one experiences a tonic-clonic seizure. You should take your medications as prescribed and have your healthcare provider monitor you for further seizures.

If a person has a first time seizure, it is important to call 911. Getting the necessary medical attention can stop the progression of the seizures.
Tonic-clonic seizures can be caused by a number of different factors. A few of these include metabolic and infectious etiologies. However, they are generally not contagious.
