Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures
These seizures begin on both sides of the brain and last for 1-3 minutes. During this time, a person loses consciousness and has stiffening and jerking of their arms and legs.
This is a medical emergency, so call for help right away. Your doctor may also order other tests to see what's causing the seizures.
Treatment for tonic-clonic seizures includes medicines, changes in lifestyle for adults and children, and sometimes surgery. Your doctor will decide which medicine is best for you.
Taking medications regularly reduces the risk of having a seizure, so it's important to follow your doctor's instructions about when and how much you should take them. If you stop using your medication suddenly, you might have prolonged or repeated seizures that can be dangerous or even life-threatening.
Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy
In rare cases, people who have tonic-clonic seizures that aren't treated with medicines can die suddenly. This is called sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, or SUDEP.
