Generalised tonic seizure, also known as grand mal seizure, is a serious medical condition that causes a person to lose consciousness. Usually, a generalised tonic seizure happens suddenly and the person may fall or have a jerking movement.

If the tonic seizure continues for more than five minutes, the person can become confused or may even go unconscious. When he or she regains consciousness, he or she will have a headache.
