Tonic clonic and absence seizures are types of epilepsy. These types of seizures are associated with loss of consciousness. They can be generalized or focal.
Tonic clonic seizures are characterized by repeated jerking movements of the legs, arms, and face. The tonic jerks usually last less than five minutes.

Tonic clonic and absence epilepsy can be treated effectively with valproic acid. However, it is important to note that if a patient stops taking valproic acid, there is a risk of relapse. Depending on the condition of the patient, the doctor may prescribe anti-seizure medications, nerve stimulation, or surgery.
Generalized onset tonic-clonic seizures are the most common form of generalized epilepsy. They are accompanied by rhythmic jerking of the limbs and face, followed by loss of consciousness.
In the electroencephalograph, the tonic phase is characterized by low amplitude and frequency. There are also sharp and slow waves. This ictal EEG is usually grossly abnormal.
