Revolution Dance Costumes Become Mainstream Fashions
In the age before the Industrial Revolution, people would sew their own fancy ensembles to wear for dance performances. Those who were more talented at sewing and embellishment, or had access to better raw materials and tools, could produce higher quality costumes. Until then, the majority of dancers wore whatever their regular clothing was, with specific costume pieces being reserved for special events and important members of society.

The industrial revolution introduced faster rates of manufacturing, innovative fibers and cloth production, and easier transportation to locations around the world. This led to the rapid growth of cities, tourism and, of course, a growing entertainment industry. As the demand for professional dance performers increased, so too did their need for specific costume pieces.

It was during this time that the first dedicated dancewear companies were established. In the 1700s, dancers were outfitted with a dress or suit made from a variety of fabrics that ranged from silk to wool. These garments were tailored to the specific shape and movement of the dancer. This style of dance dress became known as a tutu.

During this same period, the fashion of Orientalism began to influence both the look of ballet costumes and mainstream fashion. Ballerina skirts gradually changed from the full-length, restrictive tutus of the Diaghilev era to knee-length tulle that accentuated the dancer's point work and multiple turns. Eventually, ballet dresses started to become more standardized and resembled a uniform worn by dancers in many roles.

In 1996, Scott Harris launched his own dancewear company called Revolution Dancewear from his basement in north suburban Glenview. revolution dance costumes focused on selling dance shoes and bodywear, but by 2006 Harris started designing and producing recital costumes. Initially, Harris was determined to make his company stand out by providing superior product quality and instant shipping directly to studios. His goals are still a cornerstone of the company, which now serves more than 18,000 studios nationwide, outfitting children and adults in everything from twirling to hip hop.

Today, the Niles-based company, which is backed by Audax Private Equity and Incline Equity Partners, is pirouetting into a bigger role in the industry by acquiring Dance Direct, the largest online retailer of dancewear in the United Kingdom and Europe. The acquisition increases Revolution's headcount to almost 100, and more than doubles its revenue.
