The military uniform is a symbol that represents service in the military and loyalty to a country. The design of the uniforms differs from country to nation and reflects changes in political, economic, social, and technological conditions. The first military uniforms combined British and French styles, with colored facings that identified units by their origin region (New England units had white faces, Southern units blue, and Mid-Atlantic States red). Modern army uniforms continue to evolve due to technical considerations relating to advancements in weapons technology as well as cultural and anthropological factors. In the early 90s, for example, the Army started replacing its worn-out wool jacket with an aging windbreaker. It also introduced specialized elements of uniforms to suit specialized roles.
