Army Costumes for Men, Women, and Kids
The military has long used uniforms to create a sense of identity. They are a key element in military training and are designed to distinguish troops from each other, particularly in the case of infantry, cavalry, and other specialist units.
While brightly coloured uniforms were once common, they have given way to more practical clothing for use in modern conditions. However, for ceremonial occasions, some units continue to retain distinctive features. This is true of the Russian army for example, where units with a long history such as the Bersaglieri, horse artillery, and alpine contingents still wear traditional uniforms, whilst the regiments of the presidential guard and mounted carabinieri have a more classic dark blue dress uniform that dates back to the 19th century.
In the United States, early Army uniforms were influenced by British and French traditions. One of the first Army-wide regulations in 1789 stipulated a blue coatee with colored facings, indicating a unit's region of origin: New Englanders wore white facings, southern units wore blue, and units from mid-Atlantic states wore red. Pantaloons were originally white, then gray and eventually sky blue, and hats were either tricornes or a shako, depending on unit function.
After the Napoleonic Wars, a period of military uniform modernization began in the nineteenth century. The American Civil War saw the introduction of khaki uniforms for regular troops, based on those worn by the British army in India. The khaki trousers were lighter and shorter than the previous heavy cotton uniforms, and were complemented by light wool jackets. Soldiers also wore puttees around their legs to keep them from burning on the fires of their encampments.
By the end of World War I, drab colours were gradually introduced into army uniforms. This was partly due to economic considerations, but also because the republican, fascist, and communist regimes that replaced the monarchies had little interest in preserving their colourful old-fashioned uniforms.
In addition to drab colours, modern army uniforms often feature epaulets and other shoulder straps for decorations, as well as badges and insignia for specific unit functions. A number of different tartans have been developed, including the US Army's own "drill grey," which consists of black, khaki, and two shades of green. The Army Psychological Operations Regiment, meanwhile, has its own tartan that features black, white, red, and gold.
The USA's current army uniform is called the AGSU (Army Ground Combat Uniform). It has been fielded in a 'wave' approach, starting with IET locations in 1QFY21. Eventually, it will be issued to all enlisted and officer personnel at these IET/OSUT Central Initial Issue Points (CIIPs). In army costume , additional specialized uniform elements may be developed as needed for other special operations or situations. For example, the Army could develop a more lightweight windbreaker to replace the heavier uniforms currently used in warmer climates. In such cases, it would be expected that a similar range of colors and designs will be available for the new uniforms.
