Matt Stone and Trey Parker met at the University of Colorado in a film class, and were introduced to each other because of their passion for Monty Python. Terry Gilliam's cutout paper animations for the Flying Circus influenced their initial cartoon shorts, Jesus vs. Santa and Mr. South Park Plush that served as the prototypes for the style, tone, and character design of South Park.


Although the producers of South Park maintain that they're not politically right, their thumbprints are all over the show and it's not difficult to find political commentary in any episode of the program. The first season of the show aired in 1997, just a few years before President George W. Bush credited The Simpsons with a decline in "family values." The show has never shied away from controversial topics and topics, ranging from gender identity rights to abortion and climate change denial.


Parker and Stone might be progressives, but they can find plenty to disagree with on both sides. In a 2006 episode an animal half-man, half-bear and half-pig named ManBearPig threatened to destroy South Park. The episode showed Al Gore as a crazy guy who believes his movie An Inconvenient Truth is a partisan movement instead of an alarming scientific warning.



Another episode that was controversial from the same season was a discussion of how big corporations such as Starbucks aren't morally superior to small-scale entrepreneurs, despite having higher resources. In the same episode, smoking bans were contrasted with fascism. The conclusion was that individuals must accept responsibility for their actions.


The show also tackled the question of whether or not a city should carry the Confederate Flag. In the years before the rush of post-George Floyd to amend racist symbols, South Park's Jimbo, a gun-toting uncle was determined to keep the flag since it reflects his family's past. Chef chef, one of only a few Black residents of the town, claimed that the flag was racist.
