Tonic-clonic seizures, also known as grand mal seizures, cause rapid involuntary jerking and stiffening of the arms and legs on both sides of the body. These seizures occur in about 25% of all people diagnosed with epilepsy.
The seizure lasts only a few seconds to a few minutes. Afterwards, you may have a headache or feel tired and confused.

How a seizure happens
A person has a seizure when their brain cells (neurons) stop sending and relaying electrical signals normally. This can happen for a few reasons, such as illness, injury, or environmental factors.
Tonic-clonic seizures, which are formerly known as grand mal seizures, are the most common type of seizure. During the tonic phase, the person’s arms and legs begin to jerk rapidly and rhythmically. They also flex and relax at the elbows, hips, and knees.
