Cattle Decap Canvas Talks Terrasite, their 7th album
San Diego grindcore vets Cattle Decapitation have a long track record of incorporating grisly concepts into their music as well as their name. The band's lyrics blend medical terms as well as disgusting fecal images, misanthropy and dirt black humor to create a dizzying but hilarious depravity that nothing but the most technical death metal could ever hope to match. Although many of the band's members have gone and gone, and so has their sonic approach The band has been able to keep their momentum going throughout the course of nearly three decades.


The Pit spoke with Travis Ryan, the vocalist for their new album Terrasite. The album is released today on Metal Blade. Ryan's vision for a world of turmoil is both empathetic as well as brutally intense. It's perhaps odd for a vegetarian group to make a social comment in the context with gruesome slaughter. Yet, this contradiction has been a long-standing tradition in extreme music.



Cattle Decap Canvas's unrelenting hate for humanity manifests in the death-grindcore blur. The band's early work were a collection of sloppy ideas that were thrown together in an indiscriminate manner they have refined their craft through the course of four previous albums for Metal Blade, most notably with 2009's The Harvest Floor.


On Terrasite the band moves from the fury of their previous album to an almost nihilistic state of being that's both uncomfortable and futile. The band paints a dark portrait of a pathetic human race who's lost the ability to control their own planet.



While the overall mood of the album is depressing and dark however, there are a few instances of optimism sprinkled throughout. The title track is an eerie melody that is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It's paired with lyrics about finding a way of living in a world that is crumbling all around us.


In addition to discussing the themes of apocalypse that are featured on the album, Ryan touches upon some personal subjects as well. In the beginning portion of the album, Ryan reveals about the loss of The Locust's bassist Gabe Serbian as well as drummer David Astor.


Cattle Decapitation is touring in support of Terrasite, starting the 18th of January in San Diego. read more will continue to 1720, LA before wrapping up in the NYC's Le Poisson Rouge.
