Tonic clonic seizures are caused by an atypical spread of electrical signals through the brain. These signals send messages to the muscles and cause muscle contractions and loss of consciousness.
A tonic clonic seizure usually lasts about one to three minutes. However, it can continue for several minutes or even hours. If the seizure is prolonged, it may be considered an emergency.

You should call 911 and seek immediate medical attention if you have a tonic clonic seizure. This is especially true if the seizure continues for longer than five minutes.
Your doctor will perform a neurological examination. He or she will look at your balance, coordination, and muscle tone. In addition, you may be asked to perform simple tasks such as counting.
If your doctor thinks you have tonic clonic seizures, you may need to take medication. Anti-seizure medicine is highly effective. Some people only need one medication while others will require more than one.
Tonic clonic seizures can be very dangerous. Some may lead to an uncontrolled status epilepticus. An EEG can confirm if you have tonic clonic seizures.
