Mental Health in the UK
Since the NHS was established 70 years ago, medical advancements and treatments have been offered free of charge to people in need. Mental health hasn't had the same benefits.

And this must be led at the local level by those who are the best in their communities - such as community groups, faith groups, local charities, children's organisations and community-based peer support groups. These groups will have to be supported and facilitated with the proper training, resources, and assistance to enhance their role in creating mental health for all age groups.
GPs must also be provided the resources to offer regular check-ins that aren't overloaded by demands and can connect patients to evidence-based self-management advice or peer assistance. This will ease the strain on the NHS in general and will allow for greater capacity within mental health services.
Additionally, the general public must be encouraged to take a more active role in their own well-being by deciding how they spend their leisure time and making healthier lifestyle choices and seeking help when they require it. This can be accomplished by volunteering, attending local events and fundraising for mental health charities as and also by organizing or attending workplace health and wellness events such as mindfulness sessions.

4. Taking action

One out of four people in UK will suffer from mental illness at some time in their lives, but it's important to remember that you can recover from most mental health problems. Most are mild, short-term and can be treated with medication administered by a GP. Some conditions, like depression and anxiety, can be a result of difficult life events, such as grieving over a loss or a breakup in a relationship. Stress at work may be a contributing to the cause.
We can all do things to improve our mental health, such as eating a balanced diet, getting enough rest and physical activity, and learning to manage stress. But every person's needs are unique and at times, we may need more assistance. This could include occupational therapists, speech therapy or medications.
There is also a wide array of support and charity services that can assist with a variety of issues, including housing, debt, addiction and eating disorders. The government has set out its goals for the mental health services in the Five Year Forward View however it's our responsibility to make sure those aspirations are realized.
As the Time for Action Report highlights investing in the mental health of children and young people is vital. CAMHS spending is currently behind adult mental health spending and funding is an issue of lottery.
Prevention is now at the core of the work of health and social care providers to improve the mental health of their communities. This is reflected by the Prevention Concordat for Better Mental Health which brings together more than 140 organisations in the health and social care sectors that have pledged to making prevention of mental illness their top priority.
The NHS has made it clear that it is determined to address the stigma and inequalities that surround mental health, and the gap between physical and mental healthcare. However, there is a lot to do. We need to change the way that we think and speak about mental health. We must break down the barriers that divide us and create a society where mental wellbeing is valued just as physical wellbeing.
