The first album he's released since the release of Some Rap Songs, Earl Sweatshirt is focused on the idea of deterioration, denial and isolation on SICK! This album is his most successful work since Doris. He's still examining his deepest thoughts on the album, but the album is more affluent than previous albums. The album isn't merely about self-reflection. It's also about the ghastly realities of living in a post-pandemic world.
The rapper has hired The Alchemist to produce the album and has added a more meditative feel to the album. The album's debut track, "Old Friend," is a spooky track that evokes the glory days of Odd Future. This collective of singers and rappers initially positioned to be the forefront of hip-hop. Odd Future is now defunct and the majority of its members are household names.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the album is the constant theme of incarceration, and its effects. Earl sings about this on "Earth," and more subtly, in songs like "Titanic." In the latter song, Earl riffs on the famous disaster parable with lines such as, "Iceberg MAC kinda slim/What they didn't notice sink the ships/Capsize is one of them."
Despite its sombre content the album that has a lot of good characteristics. The album is more focused and less strenuous than previous albums, and is proof that Earl hasn't lost his quirky sense of humor. His sharp wit is always sharp, and the recording is top-notch.
