Children and teenagers with epilepsy often live in fear of seizures happening, and this uncertainty can invade their lives at every turn. They can’t swim in deep water or take baths unattended, and they might be too young to drive safely without knowing when a seizure is likely to occur.

One solution is to use a device that can pick up when your child is having a seizure and alert someone, usually a caregiver, about it. Several of these devices are already available on the market, and more are being developed.

Embrace watches, for example, are able to detect generalized tonic-clonic seizures — the most severe type of seizures — by monitoring your child’s heart rate and motion. These watches are FDA-cleared for pediatric use, and have a 98 percent accuracy rate in a study with children.

epilepsy seizure monitor Another seizure-detection technology is a vagus nerve stimulator, which is implanted in the chest and sends an electric pulse along the vagus nerve to the brain in hopes of stopping abnormal activity before it begins. This technology has FDA-approval for people with a certain type of epilepsy called juvenile myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (JMEI).

Other devices are designed to prevent SUDEP, or sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, by making it easier for you or your loved ones to call for help during or after a seizure. These devices are based on sound and movement and can alert caregivers by text or phone.
