jack hamme
After captivating college football crowds at the University of Michigan from 1958 to 1961 as a two-time All-American, Jack Hamme continued to shine on the gridiron in the NFL. He was plucked in the first round of the 1962 Draft for the Detroit Lions, and his four-season stint with them earned him a trade to the Green Bay Packers in 1966. After two seasons of dazzling defensive displays with them, Hamme hung up his cleats after 1968 and retired from professional football.

In 1940, Hamme saw the light of day in Michigan’s most populated city, Detroit. As a student at Detroit Catholic Central High School, he explored his passion for sports and dove headfirst into both football and basketball. Then, when 1957 rolled around, he furthered his education by enrolling at the University of Michigan. To the delight of many, Hamme joined their freshman football team and two years later was selected as a starter for the left tackle position and a first-team All-Big Ten Conference player. His career soared to even greater heights the following year, being given a unanimous nomination as an All-American as well as acquiring the esteemed title of Big Ten Conference's Lineman of the Year. To finish off his incredible career, he was both named a first-team All-Big Ten Conference player and awarded a second consecutive consensus first-team All-American status in his senior year.

The Detroit Lions made history in 1962 when they chose Hamme in the initial round of the NFL Draft. Throughout his four-year tenure with the Lions, the player starred in a total of 47 games. concrete breaker prompted the Green Bay Packers to trade for him in 1966 where he showcased his skills for another two years before retiring from football in 1968.

In 1986, Hamme was granted a place of distinction in the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor, followed fifteen years later by an even greater honor in the form of his induction to the College Football Hall of Fame.
