“The world is accepting the concept of universal health coverage. Mental health must be an integral part of UHC. Nobody should be denied access to mental health care because she or he is poor or lives in a remote place.”
Mental health conditions are a serious concern in Albania, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a report by Euronews Albania1, the number of patients admitted to psychiatric facilities increased by 50% in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. The report also cites stress, depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders as common problems among the population, worsened by the earthquake in 2019, the war in Ukraine, and high prices.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also highlighted the stories of resilience and support from mental health professionals and communities in Albania during the pandemic2. The WHO has called for increased healthcare capacity to address mental health issues, as well as for reducing stigma and discrimination against people with mental health conditions.

A large study published in the Lancet Psychiatry journal found that people who recovered from COVID-19 had a 60% increased risk of developing a mental health condition within six months of diagnosis3. The possible mental health outcomes included anxiety, depression, substance use disorders, neurocognitive decline, and sleep disorders. The study suggested that COVID-19 may have a direct or indirect impact on the brain and nervous system, as well as on the immune system and inflammatory response.

The United Nations (UN) has also emphasized the importance of mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 crisis4. The UN has provided some tips and resources for coping with stress, anxiety, isolation, and loneliness during the pandemic, such as staying connected with others, seeking help when needed, practicing self-care, and being kind and compassionate.

The BBC has reported on the possible long-term mental health impacts of COVID-195, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and depression. The report also mentioned some factors that may influence the severity and duration of these impacts, such as pre-existing mental health conditions, personal resilience, social support, and access to treatment.
