Mary Dinsmore Salter Ainsworth, born in Glendale in Ohio in 1913 was a pioneer in the field of psychotherapy. Her father worked for a large manufacturing firm and the family relocated to Toronto at the age of five. She went to the University of Toronto, where she studied psychology. She was a research assistant to psychologist William Blatz. She worked on a team that created psychological testing scales that were linked to Blatz's security theory. In 1946 she returned to teaching. In 1950, she was married to Leonard Ainsworth, a fellow graduate student, and relocated to London to help him complete his degree at University College, London.
While working at the Tavistock Clinic, Ainsworth and Bowlby continued their research on attachment, examining what impacts a disruption to the mother-infant bond may have on the development of children. Their findings showed that when the bond is disrupted, it can lead to developmental and emotional issues.
Ainsworth was inspired in his research by the study of animal behavior and interaction, or ethology. It challenged the conventional psychological notions that the mother-infant bond was based solely on the satisfaction of infants' fundamental physical needs. She was also enthralled by the work of Harry Harlow a University of Wisconsin researcher psychologist who conducted an experiment that was controversial with infant monkeys. His finding that the monkeys preferred cuddling with a fake surrogate mother to an unwelcome, wire-wrapped "mother" without food questioned the traditional belief that a parent-infant relationship is dependent on satisfying biological impulses.
Ainsworth has been a tireless researcher to further her research throughout her entire life. In 1998, she was awarded the American Psychological Association's Mentor Award in Developmental Psychology and the Gold Medal of Life Achievement.
