Mental Health Services on the NHS
There has been an enormous increase in people seeking treatment for mental health issues and the NHS has responded by offering services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan reaffirmed its commitment to boost investment in mental health services faster than overall NHS budget. This will include specialized work in suicide prevention.
Helping yourself
One in four of us will suffer from a mental health problem at some moment in our lives. The good news is that there are a variety of different options to seek help, and most people recover after a while. But it's important to know what assistance is available and who can provide it.
You can seek help from a variety of places like your GP (primary medical doctor for primary care), your local health centre, or a community mental health team. These teams are made up of nurses, occupational therapists psychotherapists, psychotherapists and speech and language therapists who work together with people who use the service. You can get individual or group therapy depending on the type of assistance you need.
Your GP will usually request you to fill out a form so that they can send you a referral to a local mental health team. They will also ask what type of assistance you require. You will then be examined by a member of a mental health team that may include a psychiatrist, social worker or psychologist. In some instances your evaluation and treatment will be conducted by a specialist in clinical nursing. If you're experiencing an emergency, you can call the NHS 111 helpline for urgent support. If you are already receiving support for your mental health, it is best to contact your regular team first, unless it's out of office hours, on a weekend or bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health outlined plans to create more place-based, multidisciplinary community mental health teams that have links to primary care networks. These will help to improve the quality of care that is provided to those suffering from an illness of mental health and offer support in their homes and communities, rather than in hospital.
The plan also aimed at help make crisis services more accessible by reducing wait times and allowing more beds. It would also introduce the mental transport vehicle and ensure that all ambulances are stocked with a mental liaison nurse in the control room to make sure that those who are experiencing mental distress are helped in times of crisis.
Treatment options
The NHS offers a variety of treatment options for people suffering from mental health problems. GPs are often able to treat minor conditions, but more severe conditions will require a specialist team. These teams work in community and primary health services for mental health as well as psychiatric hospitals. There are also safe spaces where you can seek help if you are feeling in a state of crisis.
Talking therapies are among the most commonly used forms of treatment for anxiety and depression. Formerly known as IAPT These programs have seen the number of people who seek them increase every year since their introduction in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has set the goal of expanding these services to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.
Psychiatric medicines are another important part of treatment. They can alleviate symptoms by altering the way chemicals work in your brain. They can also be used to lessen the negative effects of other treatments. Your doctor will suggest the best medication for you.
There are many different types of talk therapies, such as group therapy and individual therapy. Some of these are delivered in person, but others can be delivered online. Some patients prefer face-to face treatment, but it's the choice of the patient. There are also a number of charities that provide support groups and classes, such as Mind. The site contains a wealth of information that is reliable but you should be aware that there are a lot of false or misleading statements that are posted on the internet about mental health issues.
The NHS is improving the mental health system, but it is struggling to meet the demand. There are mental health assessments across the UK and the majority of are funded by clinical commissioning groups to provide their services. They typically are located in a specific region however they can also be contracted to provide national services.
A key issue is the lack of resources to meet the growing demand. There are also concerns over the quality of care, and there is a shortage of psychiatrists and nurses. The NHS is striving to improve its services by introducing new ways of working and offering more training. It also offers more efficient and safer methods of treating people in crisis. These include mobile crisis teams, as well as safe spaces.
Supporting you
Since the NHS was first introduced 70 years ago there have been positive changes for people suffering from mental health issues. Treatment options have increased and social barriers are breaking down. But there is still more to do.
People who are in mental health issues should get the help they need quickly and easily. The NHS is working to improve services so that people in need are able to access them. We will ensure that no acute hospital does not have the mental health liaison service in A&E departments and wards for inpatients by 2020/21. 70% of these services will meet the "core 24" standard by 2023/24, working towards a 100% coverage rate after that.
We will also increase community services, including talk therapy, in order to provide assistance to hundreds of thousands of people with mental health issues regardless of whether they are serious or common. We will continue to develop our national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program (IAPT), so that more people suffering from mental health issues are seen faster by trained therapists.
The NHS provides confidential, free assistance to anyone suffering from mental health issues. These include the Samaritans, Mind and Rethink. These helplines are operated entirely by volunteers who offer the opportunity to talk in a secure environment or provide advice and information on how to manage your mental health concerns.
There are also a number local organizations that provide support and guidance to people who suffer from mental health issues. adult mental health services include self-help guides, coping strategies and activities to try. A lot of these organizations offer face-to-face support groups for those who prefer this method.
For students, there is the University's Open Door Team which offers a drop-in counselling service for those who are feeling down or stressed. There is also the Nightline student counselling service which offers confidential listening and support from skilled volunteers, as well as information about other services. Charities such as Mind and Rethink can provide a wealth of information and support, both online and in local groups. They can also offer many classes and activities, ranging from mindfulness to art groups, which may be useful for people who suffer from mental health problems.
Making a referral
With mental health services under pressure, GPs have to make difficult choices about which specialist services they can refer patients to. The GP will look at the medical history of the patient and refer them to services they believe will be able to assist. They may send a referral to an NHS trust or an independent provider.
A mental health specialist will then review the referral and decide whether it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't satisfied with the referral, they'll contact the GP to discuss their decision and provide why. They could request the GP to alter the referral or ask for more details.
The ability to refer patients to a local Community Mental Health Team can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service. The system allows doctors and other healthcare professionals send patients to either a preliminary clinical assessment for mental health or directly to an appointment. However there are some exceptions. mental health testing provide both options, and the system isn't able to be used for every type of mental health referral.
A GP may also decide to refer a person to an expert community mental health service (CMT). They are typically run by a major local healthcare organization or hospital. mental health testing are a great option for those who want to consult a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist, but don't require inpatient care. They can also provide an early intervention service in which psychiatrists collaborate with psychotherapist to assist a person overcome an issue or improve the quality of their lives.
CMTs are faced with the task of ensuring that all referrals are received within a reasonable time frame. One of the issues is that a lot of referrals are deemed urgent, despite the fact that they might not be. This can cause patients who aren't in a crisis to be rushed and suffer delays.
To address this issue, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform guidelines for what constitutes an urgent referral. This was achieved by using a standardised form that asks the referrer if the case is urgent. The form has a checkbox that the referrer is able to tick if the request is urgent.
