Earl Sweatshirt's second album after Some Rap Songs last year SICK!, is his best since Doris. The album is focused on the notions of denial and deterioration. He's still exploring his innermost mental state on this album, but it's more affluent than previous work. It's not only about self-reflection and contemplation -- it's about navigating the post-pandemic landscape and its aural horrors.
This time the rapper is enlisting The Alchemist as producer and adds a more tranquil tempo to the proceedings. The album's opening track, "Old Friend," sets the tone with a powerful hook that recalls the heyday of Odd Future, the collective made up of vocalists and rappers producers and artists who was once thought to be the leading force in hip-hop's new vanguard. The group has completely dissolved and most members have become famous on their own.
The album's main theme is incarceration, and the consequences it has. Earl addresses this directly on "Earth," and more subtlely in songs such as "Titanic." He references the famous parable of the Titanic in the song "Titanic" with lines such as, "Iceberg MAC sorta slim/What would you have done to not see sinking the ships/Capsize is the flop."
Despite the sombre tone of the album There's a lot to appreciate about SICK! Earl's sense of humor evident, even with the morbid content. The production is superb and his witty humor is more sharp than ever.
